Vanity, vanity, all is vanity! His ego made him assume incorrectly and he paid for it with his life. Easy mistake to make... people waving, he thought he was doing OK... oh darn... he got it wrong. You carried this story off very well (like the tsunami did to the surfer).

You tell quite a story in only 50 words. You set the scene quickly with the novice surfer confidently going out to catch a wave wave. Nice misleading as he thinks the crowd is waving at him because he's so good, when in reality they are trying to warn him. A stunning ending. Well done. Rod

This meets the contest requirements nicely as you deliver a complete and compelling story in exactly 50 words. The content is engaging and well executed as the ending is not suspected until it is revealed. Good luck in the judging and thank you very much for sharing it.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts through your poem. I enjoyed reading it. And I think we can all relate. Many things in life are not what they seem to be.

Hello Marilyn!
Well-written!
The ocean scares me, yet I am drawn to it. Difficult to imagine that the tsunami only took one life, but I understand your choice of victims. Your story held me from beginning to ending!
Best Wishes!

Thanks for your really nice review and for your candid expression of ocean-fear. I grew up by water and learned to swim early on, BUT after I watched several scary beach monster movies, I developed a secret fear of water...guess it's not secret anymore! Thanks so much!

MLB,

Yikes. That's rather sad, isn't it? But, on the other hand, it's fabulous. To only lose ONE life in a situation like that would be remarkable.

BTW, it's really nice to meet you - welcome to FS! Thanks for sharing and good luck in the voting!

Apart from the comma after tsunami, which needs to go, this is a great little shortie. It brings to mind the "Not waving, drowning" saying which is also about perception.

This guy was too full of himself! He assumed that the waves were great when they really were dangerous, The townspeople were trying to wave him in but he assumed they were cheering him on. And he was the only death! Good job on this!
God bless!
Patty

The sea is unpredictable and this surfer was complacent! But tsunami's are rare so I expect he can be forgiven. I wish you luck with the contest, this is a fun short write with a deadly conclusion, love Dolly x

You've accomplished the impossible, telling a complete, suspenseful story in 50 words. Well done. A very colorful example of the dangers of assuming. Good luck with the contest!
