This 5-7-5 along with its accompanying artwork depict the true horrors of life, poverty and hunger. Cancer is another.
Good luck in the contest.
Keep writing

Of course you're right. And the sad life that many lead - how we wish we could help - and we do help - we give and donate over and over - it's a drop in the bucket - more and better jobs is part of the answer. This President has done a lot to alleviate the joblessness. The sad dreary everyday life is quite another. I hope we can help each other.
I saw where Jane Fonda bragged she had just bought her last new piece of clothing - well I'm sure it cost a lot. But we (I) buy nothing but items from the thrift shop - and pass along good items to the homeless. We can do what we can.
Great poem.

"The Horrors of Real Life", is short, succinct and very much to the point. Woven through these short lines are the golden threads of truth. You KEEP WRITING and I'll KEEP READING. I look forward to seeing your next post.

Very clever use of the horror genre. Sometimes, real life can be much more scary than anything fiction. I like this a lot. Thanks for sharing. Great job!

People never know when they might be thrown into this situation. When my unemployed ex walked to go live with his girlfriend, he left me with a baby and a mortgage. I was working for a boss who disliked me and was looking for a way to fire me. I was potentially headed for a women's shelter. Many of these women in shelters once lived affluent lives. I am one of the lucky ones who did not have to face that fate.

Thanks again for your review. Yes, you never know what tomorrow may bring and it's not guaranteed to anyone. The everyday trials and tribulations of life is worse than any spooky story someone can cook up.

Wow, you're definitely becoming the expert at stripping away the mask and showing us the real face of the life too many people live. This is raw and honest, and I respect that you didn't take the standard route of portraying fictional monsters. Congratulations on your second-place finish! You're being recognized a lot lately. I think you're hitting some nerves that need to be hit, and the membership and the committee are taking notice.

Wow! Thank you Michele for such a wonderful review. For too many of us the everyday, struggles, trials and tribulations of life is the real horror. That is far worse than any spooky story someone can imagine.

That's so true. Those in the rarefied upper echelon either can't or won't see what others are going through. I can't help but wonder how many meals could have been bought by the money spent on the solid gold rocking horse Baron Trump supposedly used to ride. I love those stories where the landlord of a building in filth and disrepair is sentenced to live for a time in one of those apartments. Karma (and justice) is a b***h!

By the way, you're very welcome for the review. :-)

That says it all. The stories behind so many people at this juncture in our history are so despicable and yet we can only stand by and watch, lest we end up in the same situation. I love that Apple has stepped up and donated a large amount to the CA homeless plight. Let us hope the money is used for what it is meant to help. Great presentation.

This meets the contest requirements splendidly as you deliver a technically sound 5-7-5 with correct line and syllable count throughout. The content is a clever approach to the topic of horror since you attack it from the stressful side of daily living which is something everyone can relate to. Good luck in the judging and thank you very much for sharing it.

Who could take issue with the unfortunate reality expressed in your 5-7-5? It would be more effective if you'd complement it with an illustration depicting someone like the person in your poem. It would be easy to find one in a search (free) on "Google Images. com"

I haven't read the other contest entries, but I think, at the least, it should be a contender for a prize. Good luck, 13th Poet!
