Great message to your poem. Congratulations on placing. I have always thought that if I could give my grandchildren one thing, it would be to help them understand their worth, and that they can achieve anything they set their hearts and minds to. Well done!

This well written abab rhymed acrostic gives good advice to those that are bullied. Rise above it and show that you are able to be your beautiful self from the inside out.
Good luck and keep writing
Joan

Hello Steve, this is a beautiful acrostic. Congratulations on being placed. A very impressive poem - I missed this posting. A very poetic, moving piece of work. A winner I thought. Regards Dorothy

Many thanks, Dorothy. Miss Merri's winning poem was wonderful too, so no regrets. Fingers crossed I will go one better with my sonnet entry!

Ah yes... such a beautiful acrostic poem! I love the way you have told this sweet story, of the ugly duckling who is bound to become the beautiful swan. My favorite lines are the ones beginning with DUCK, but the whole poem is elegant and memorable. Congratulations for the second place win. In many ways, it outshines the first place winner. It is one you should definitely publish.

And many thanks, once again. No, I don't think my piece outshines yours, which was beautiful. I am happy I didn't get out-done by what I call a laundry-list acrostic. Yours was far from that.

As I said, I was happy with the way this came out and I thought I had given myself a good chance. Time to pin my hopes on my sonnet. I guess you will have one in that race too. I'd better go and check it out.

    Cheers.

You do not need to worry about the sonnet contest, I assure you! Thank you for your gracious response. I know how it feels to lose to an obviously inferior poem. Often I do not even achieve honorable mention, and once in awhile, I have to wonder why. But that is only occasionally. So much depends on the perception of those judging, I guess.

    Better not get me started!

I guess I can't complain - I have won my fair share, but it's the ones that feel good which don't even get a placing that I wonder about.

Your poems are of a consistently high standard and I hope you know that.

The unhappy child that turns into the beautiful swan that was always there waiting to come out. Not sure if that's what you meant but it's what I got. Well written Acrostic Steve,
cheers,
valda

Yes, exactly what I meant. Not necessarily a child, either - anyone who is put down for surface appearance.

    Thanks for the thoughtful review.

That is a lovely and very artful poem. The ugly duckling has always been a favorite story of mine. The metaphor is so apt for so many children that suffer from self-confidence at a certain age and then bloom into beautiful people, eventually. The picture is fitting.

Your well-written, touching acrostic poem conveys a powerful message about inner and outer beauty. Yes, some people--in their opinions of others--never get past the cover of the book.

    Thanks, Janice.

To anyone with a real understanding of people, it's such an obvious message, but it may take a long time to sink in for others.

A very well-written Acrostic about the ugly duckling disguise that turns out to be a beautiful adorable swan with a gracious long neck and white feathers fooling all the bullies in the animal kingdom.

Hello Steve

I think this will resonate with many readers, like me, who bloomed late and who love the Andersen tale.

A rhymed metered acrostic with a pertinent message is in a special class.

Good luck in the contest

Blessings Julia
