I like this and the message conveyed in it. We are different and they were different times. We're all the same though and God's children. The minds of children are so fascinating. The way they see things is genuine and amazing. I love the way you've presented this very engaging story and brought it forth. Thanks for sharing this well written work. Well done!

What a delightful story. Your descriptions of Hallie and her cottage are well done. The dialogue between the little girl and Hallie are endearing. Children lead with their hearts and see so much more clearly than adults sometimes.
Good luck in the contest.

What great memories!

Your description of each of the rooms in the house were so precise. I could visualize walking though them and having a meal at that table.

Love, from a child, often overlooks differences... until somehow the world causes many to look for differences instead of love?

I enjoyed it greatly!

What a lovely story, these people maybe ships that will pass, but I remember the amazing people God has brought into my life that shaped how I am today, most of my prejudice born from is gone and good riddance to bad rubbish, I taught my kids to not not notice difference, but what is common to all men, a good family, friends and most of all, the good Lord Himself, that is enough, Hallie was right. Well done. Blessings, Roy

Ms. Feldt's portrait of a child's inter-racial friendship is well-told, and lovingly-sketched. What a pleasure it is -- for this reader, anyway -- to read English prose that exhibits proper grammar and syntax ... for a change. Five and 1/2 stars for this story.

Yes, a personal connection to individual human beings is the key to overcoming prejudice and misunderstanding. We only know our place on this earth once we make room for everyone else's stories in our hearts. Excellent use of dialogue and imagery in this piece. It set a nostalgic and meaningful tone.

The eyes of a child see only love and friendship.
Then that would make us all children now wouldn't it?
I loved this story. The lines flowed evenly throughout and I was able to understand every bit of it.
Great job on this one.
Nice!

Super job with this. I think you really created a strong contrast between the comfortable white family and the poor black family, but also some important similairities. They share a faith. It was great to render this tense but moving conversation through the eyes of the innocent girl, who seems drawn somehow by the simple black woman next door and her simple but warm life. What really matters here is love, the love of family and a simple faith in God that makes life come to life out of next to nothing. The detailed descriptions of Hallie's shack made the painful situation of the black family all the more poignant, and stood in stark contrast to the girl's descriptions of the TV and comfortable sofa and fancy clock in her own house. It raises more questions than it answers, this simple little piece, and those are the pieces that matter most in the lit world, I propose. estory
