"Are these people serious, or seriously delusional?" Nice word play.

"Gag me with a serrated-edged spoon" Tell me what you really think?

"Perhaps these people should get a pet rock. It's rumored those travel for free." Nothing wrong with well-placed sarcasm...

Enjoyed!

Great story, and I like that you stick to your convictions but welcome the opinions of others. I am a dog lover to the core, but I think guide dogs are service dogs. Period. There may be other valid ones I am not aware of, but for now I stick to guide dogs! Your story is very well written.

I have so many problems with people bringing their service animals into restaurants or onto planes or onto trains, etc.
I don't think you mentioned it, but what if someone is allergic to pet fur/hair? Are they SOL because people with service animals have the right? What about the rights of other passengers to enjoy a flight without sneezing or having trouble breathing?
Airlines should be able to come up with a procedure to accommodate all passengers. Be it set aside a certain section of the plane for service animals, or move passengers around to get away from service pets and make it a more enjoyable flight for all.
You state in paragraph four: However, cats and dogs, who serve zero functions whatsoever as service animals, are currently allowed to travel as if they were. I assume you are talking about dogs that are not trained as service animals, for dogs are by far the best service animals around. Otherwise, what animals would qualify as service animals? And there are people who truly need the help.
I really like opinion pieces, and look forward to reading more from you. Maybe next time you can take on the shrinking airplane seats!

Hi Brett. My opinion is that a pet shouldn't be allowed into a restaurant unless it's a guide dog. If there are tables outside I don't have an issue with dogs as long they are well behaved. So in principle, we are in agreement. All best. Ulla:))

I agree, Brett. People take advantage of anything to their advantage. Yes, there needs to be some strict laws. I remember hearing about a woman who had a peacock as a support animal. She wanted to take it on a plane. There was a big to do. She didn't get to take it. You expressed your thoughts/feelings well. Thanks for sharing. Respectfully, Jan

Excellently done, loved the addition of a little humor for effect. No problems noted and as I read I pictured the show on TV with the Clampets as they flew after getting rich with all their animals in the main part of the plane.

I laughed at your "pet rock" comment. Someone went online to register an emotional support animal and put in "bee hive" and the silly software just registered it. Yes, it's a crazy world. I see animals at the grocery store all the time. But the worst is that poor man who had his face bit by a huge dog on the plane.

I agree that the rules regarding emotional support animals are much to lax. There was one story about a lady with an emotional support duck. Why should an animal that can't control its bowels be allowed in a public place? I love animals, but there are places where they don't belong. Even miniature horses have been taken places they shouldn't have been. Most of these animals are pets, and it has to be stressful for them to be dragged onto airplanes and into hotels and restaurants. Pretty soon these pets will be so stressed out they'll need emotional support animals of their own.

Well expressed opinion piece, and I certainly agree. It's getting out of hand. Your passion for the topic kept me reading, even though you neglect to "throw a bone" to those who truly have different brains that need help that most of us do not. The autistic person, for instance, who has never flown but could if his emotional support animal and life companion is allowed on a flight.

Hi Brett. Good for you on writing opinion pieces for 2020. I write them regularly and many people agree. Those who don't state their case and we agree to disagree.

I used to be a flight attendant for Pan Am years ago. My biggest complaint is/was unruly kids running all over the place. Same goes in restaurants. If you want to take your kids or service animal, OK. But either has to behave.

I don't blame people for wanting pets in the cabin instead of in the hold of the ship. Many times airline workers are careless, even cruel to these caged pets. Some pets have escaped and are never found again. Not to mention that OOPS the cargo hold wasn't pressurized and the pet died in transit. Therefore, some passengers, to get their pet from here to there pass them off as service animals. That's my 2 cents.
Marilyn
