Well done, mate. In the gun control debate, I have stated I cannot understand, fully the pressures in a country with 10 times the population of my own. (Australia.) I will say that modern rock artists and writers need to curb some of their outlandish songs that I do believe had an influence especially on the mentally unstable. No spags.

Being a former teacher, I am aware of the dis-associative problems that come with all adolescence. That being said, there are too many people taht want to disavow the responsibility issue BEFORE it ever reaches the most horrid of consequences.

Forced compliance to certain rules in society is not a good solution- because eventually 'the forced' will explode. The ability 'to teach morals and citizenship' is a must.

But in today's society...we can't agree on what morals and citizenship' actually mean. When I was growing up --- there was not a question to the meaning of these words.

Just for a note: "Red Flag" laws are open to far to much abuse than ever fixing the problem. If you want a gun, and can't 'get' one ... you can find something just as 'helpful'.

Not an easy problem to solve!

Hi Brett, one thing we can agree on is that the gun doesn't pick itself up and starts shooting. It's the hand of the crazy person that does. And there stops our agreement. Guns are far to readily available in the States, hence you have so many tragic and insane deaths happening all the time. Nobody does anything about it because it's all about money and politics. I have no sympathy until all that has changed, however tragic it is on the affected families. All best. Ulla:))

Well said. But you'll catch a lot of hostility for stating guns do not kill people. I agree they don't. It's the idiot holding the gun. The only thing about Red Flag laws is that it would be too easy to accuse someone out of spite. Those kind of situations are never easy to clear up.

The issue of depression is one thing, but another is gun violence.
It is very disheartening to read about the recent school massacres and shootings taking place in this country.
You write well.
I think you bring a very suggestive topic to view here and that is gun violence.
Guns do in fact kill people. That is a fact. That is just my opinion. And it is a sad thing to think about.

This is an interesting read. You cite some chilling facts [it would be nice if you provided source references] and pose some pertinent questions. Hopefully, you post will prompt readers to think about this social problem {thumbs up}.

Here are a few points you might like to consider:

the end all - be all excuse when someone doesn't want to own up to the responsibility for their actions -- I'd punctuate it as "end-all be-all".

it's too late with irrepairable carnage committed that can't be undone. -- This is repetitious. "Irreparable" [note the spelling] implies it "can't be undone".

Here are a couple real life examples -- You actually cite three, not two! Just saying...

Guns do not kill people, but easy access to guns in so many American homes must add to this disturbing problem of school shootings. I don't know what the answer is, but you're right, they need to find one. A well written and interesting read.
cheers.
