This is an excellent commentary on 'time.' We certainly cannot control it. As you point out, in youth we wish it would hurry up and not make us wait. Then one day we wake up and wonder how come it flies so fast.

Happy New Year right back at ya. What a wonderful poem this was. With terrific meter and well chosen rhymes, I sailed through from start to finish. The content, of course, was marvelous and oh so true! Hugs, Lou

This is an excellent poem concerning how we view time from childhood onward. Amazing how much more appreciative we become of it when it's running out. Best of luck in the contest. Marilyn

How did I miss this? I apologize, dear Z. (I've had eye strain die to my vision loss and most glad I've had writing tucked away for posting.) Anyway, this is wonderful and a fine entry for the contest. Death is a door or gateway. A place we all must go. But for the Christian, a pleasant journey as the end brings greatmreward.
Sending you my best today as always and best wishes for the contest,
Sally :))
PS~ I hope to be published in February. My Christmas gift was a rough cut version of 'What The Blind Girl Saw' from my middle son. I thank you for all your encouraging reviews and comments and support of my work. This completely floored me and I haven't stopped crying! That being said, I have not forgotten about our writing collaboration but I need to focus on getting this proofed and in print.
Sal :)

Hello Sal. There is absolutely no apology necessary from you. I have written several poems and stories referring to death as a door. Back a few months ago I published a poem on FS called "The Door At the End of the Path". it's one of my best poems about the subject. Thank you for this beautiful review and for your steadfast supprt of my writing, even when I go down a rabbit hole. I see more rabbit holes in my future. HAHAHA.
You work on the priorities of YOUR book. That's what's important.
    Your friend,

This poem brings true on so many levels. Time has a tendency to fly by without us realising it until too late. Thank you for bringing that to attention. A very nice write. Definite six from me.

"When I Was A Mere Boy", is an exceptionally well-written and deftly descriptive piece. It was a pleasure to both read and review this talented poet's work.To me, this is six, but sadly I've run out of them. I look forward to seeing your next post.

You can't have experienced nine decades! Nevertheless, I relished your understanding of "time" and your rhymed quatrains. I admired your "anchor," "cup of tea" and "door" metaphors and am certain you remember all you've been. Cheers and best wishes in the contest- Joan

Hi Joan. You are right. I have not experienced 9 total decades. I experienced 3 years in the 40's and 3 days in the new 20's. Thank you so much for the positive review and award of six stars. I'm glad you liked the metaphors I used in the text. I appreciate the good wishes for the contest. THANK YOU. Robert

Well, I would never have estimated your age in the 90s, so whatever relationship you have with time, Robert, it's working for you.

The passage of time is so relative to age, expectation and in fact it's a real thing too.

This is a poem with terrific universal appeal. Easy to follow, excellent metre and rhyme and the ballad is such a pleasing form.

Just one small suggestion in line two

I wished, wanted, cried something for time to fly.

That said a terrific poem that I much enjoyed. :))

Gloria

Hi Gloria. I don't want to mislead anyone. I was born in '46 so three days ago I stuck a flag in the 9th decade. I'm only 73. Some days it seems like 100.
Thank you very much for your positive and complimentary review. I appreciate your evaluation of the poem and I will look at your suggestion and consider a change to the second line in the first stanza. Thank you for the input. It is always a pleasure to hear from you. I am pleased you like the poem.
    Robert

Nine decades? You rock for a nonagenarian. I appreciate poetry that rhymes and follows a meter and this is an inspiring example of what I might try myself, someday if I ever broaden my horizons from short stories to poetry. Thanks so much. You deserve the distinction.

Hi Carl. I don't want to mislead. I am living in my 9th decade. I was born the end of 1946 so I started in the 40's. I'm a rookie in the 2020 decade. :) I'm only 73. (I can't believe I said that) Most of my poetry is Ballad meter (8-6-8-6). I do write some free verse.
Thank you for your complimentary comments. I did technical and corporate writing in my career, but never published any of my creative writing until 6 months ago. It's never too late to start. Good luck with your poetry, and short stories. Robert

OIC. So you are my age--even better! I was born in '45. Your professional experience shows strongly in your creative work. Thanks for clearing up my misconception.

Hello Carl. Sometimes I use too much shorthand in my comments. I didn't make it clear. Some other folks made the same reference because they interpreted the same way you did. Robert

I've learn to overcome that lonely feeling. When I get out there all alone, I try to figure out what everyone else is doing wrong. HA HA HA Robert

Hello there, my friend. This is such a beautiful ballad, I wish I had a six left for you. It's a virtual 6. Truly lovely, I adore this line:
"Since age is just a cup of tea,
I had so small a taste."
Happy New Year! ~Kerry
