That was amazing! The poem told the whole story of a brutal war and what these men went through. I owe it all to the people that served, past and present to protect. Thanks for sharing.

What an exceptionally fine poem, Dianne. It is well worthy of its current position at the top of the All Time Best list for this year. There is something of the haunting measure of the Kyrielle about its structure.
Each verse is like the facet of a gem casting a different light on the hope, faith, and suffering of the various family members as the seasons pass. Your use of specific details brings the poem to life. It is as if we are looking through a window onto your family. I found your verse about young "Fum" collecting sticks for "Big Brudder" to be particularly telling.
Although not part of the poem, your author notes provide a context of great interest. I applaud your detailed research and the care with which you have constructed your poem. It exudes sustained emotion, and it's a pleasure to read it aloud to appreciate its musicality. Congratulations.

    Dear Tony,
I need you to know that your review brought me to tears. Thank you for your exceptional rating and thoughtful review. In truth, this piece was challenging for me to write on a number of levels: I attempted to encapsulate everything my father had shared with me regarding the life and death of Bodie, everything I had read in the book my uncle, Dr. Francis Kenel wrote about his brother, and do so in a manner that would not be considered overly sentimental or maudlin.
There have been many moments over the years when I have thought of my uncle's imprisonment and subsequent death, only to become physically ill; I simply cannot fathom the horrors that he experienced, and how, through it all, his family and loved ones believed "Bodie" would return alive and well. Above all, they kept their faith and lived their lives with dignity and honor.
I was able to visit with "Fum" this past summer. My uncle Jerry is now 81 years old...the last of my father's siblings...
I am honored and humbled, Tony, by your words of acknowledgment.
I, too, love to read it aloud...
My greatest hope is to collate all of these writings of my family into a book to give to my children and their children that they may know their roots and our family's history...
    Thank you again, Tony...
Hoping you are safe and well...

Wow. What an amazing piece. I loved learning the history and the personal information made me pause. I often forget when I watch or read of WWII that there was a huge human cost and each individual family suffered in different ways. Writing is excellent, weaving imagery and emotion in every stanza. Outstanding, this was one of the best I have seen on here in a long while.

I think I enjoyed your author's notes as much if not even more than your piece. It was rich with history and emotion. It brought even more life into the piece itself when re-read after the notes. What tenderness and love is in this piece. Great job.

So sorry for your family's loss. It must have been difficult for everyone. Your poem is powerful and poignant; very moving. It portrays the profound loss because of the atrocities of war. Excellent work.

This is a wonderful post, Diane. I enjoyed reading all of it. I admire you for your thorough recounting to express the caring and worry of families whose loved ones went to war and never returned. A sixer if I had one. Marilyn

    Hello Marilyn!
So pleased my words resonated with you.
This piece began as a kyrielle, and then it took on a life of its own as the "voices" of others entered my mind and took their places on the paper...

    Thank you again!

This is a sad poem and, I can tell, it was written from the heart. I loved the flow and the way it was written. We lost a lot of boys in both wars. Good luck in the contest and thank you for sharing.

This is quite impressive. Sad but, outstanding story telling in a poem as well. You have beautifully told this man's story in a way that makes me sad yet I feel like you gave this man respect and even love. I'm not sure if you knew him personally or if he was too early for your time, but I'm sure those in your family that knew him will be very pleased indeed to see the love you show for his life. Well done my friend. Good luck in this contest. xoxo deborah

Hello Diane,
A beautiful, emotional poem/tribute to your uncle
and all who perished in the war. My mom lost her older brother, James,
in the European invasion, and her other brother, Ray,
was at Pearl Harbor during the attack, but survived.
You've told his story and that of all those who waited at home
exceptionally well.
Such a terrible, sad irony that it was a torpedo that sunk the ship,
though there was no way to know what the ship was.
Perfect ending to the poem.
Best wishes to you.
Robert

You are correct: the Arisan Maru was unmarked as a POW ship; there was no way for the Captain of the Snook to know...
    Thank you, friend...
