This poem is so enjoyable. Your descriptive prose transported me and I imagined the landscape depicted within the film "Giant". I have to share that every time I have ever had to visit Texas was miserable. Your description of the "Texas Ladies" in 1944 is priceless. The last stanza is my favorite.

Hi Jay, it actually made me laugh. It is as if you're taking the Mickey out of them all, which I have a sneaking feeling you just did. I so enjoy reading your well written poems. Ulla:))

Hi 'Jake' I'll tell you something... a place full of dust and rattlesnakes, ain't no place for Susan either! LOL, I expect to all those 'citified' folk, being from the country was so foreign to them they just couldn't see the forest through the trees, as they say. When I was 16, up in Vermont for the summer, a friend came to visit. She'd never seen more trees together in one place than one or two in a person's backyard. When she came up she was terrified by the woods thinking she'd be attacked at any moment by a bear! LOL

I love that this is autobiographical, you drew me into your world, training in the middle of nowhere Texas. Those big city guys need to get a clue! Thanks for sharing your memories, and well done,
Carol

From the perspective this 'semi- literate hillbilly from Kentucky' ... I can relate.

You did a great job recreating the 'vernacular' of your hillbilly. (I believe that' what the slang is called?)

What a grand and poetic way to describe homesickness.

G'day mate. I liked your tongue-in-cheek story/poem. I guess every state in America has its own accent. I could pick up the gist of what you were trying to get across and I don't think you were semi-illiterate at all. Well done.

I love this one Jake! I love the humor that shines throughout, and the sassy spirit of it, and the cleverness I find in the way it's written. It is so much fun to come across something like this. It has great meter and rhyme and I loved the internal rhyme in each stanza's third line. That's not something a semi-literate anyone could do. *smile* Very nicely done. Thanks so much for sharing this one. MM

There so many line in your poem that made me smile . I will give you an example---

You head fer a town, they ain't neer around,
they always to durn fer apart.
There you'll find dolls, or should I say molls,
they shorely won't soften one's hart
