This was a superb and wonderful story. I like how he discovered his talent and the manner, which he shared with the younger generation. The most enjoyable part for me was his granddaughter taking him to her class.

I like this Susan. What a surprise and great privilege it was to meet this great man and get his poetry straight from his mouth. This had to be a very memorable occasion that you'll cherish. Thanks for sharing this inspirational and well written work. Great job and well done yet again!

Very nice piece! I think once you write poetry, it is something that you will always want to do. Even if we write it and throw it in the trash, it is genuine and true to one's self.

Thank you. Interesting that you say that because most of my poetry I never share. But I enjoy rereading it.

Hi what a great read.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. We got us some cowboy poets. One ole guy had a breast plate made for his horse that said 'cowboy poet...the guy on my back's just the mouthpiece '
He called his horse Longfella:-)

Thank you. Longfella! What a hoot! I love that poetry is so openly appreciated and shared by grocery store stockers and cowboys

That was a really wonderful story. What resonated with me, was about his granddaughter. After my first book of children's story was published, my grandson's school asked if I would come and read to the children. I did, and made sure they all knew I was Eric's grandmother. He was so chuffed, bless him. I could just picture that little girl's face when she took her granddad in. lol. It's funny what the little things do for a person's ego. I really enjoyed reading this and was a little bit envious of you sitting having coffee with William Arndell. :)) Sandra xxx

Thank you! He said himself, that was the best part. I wrote that 20 years ago and we are still friends. He kept encouraging me to put my columns into a book which I finally did last year.

I'm glad you did, there's nothing like holding your own book in your hands. xx

Hello Susan. This is an interesting encounter with a poet. No matter how much, or little, I write, I would like the same experience as William. I would love for one of my granddaughters take me to her school and introduce me as her grandfather the poet.

I had to fill out some paperwork recently and I signed my occupation as Writer. Of the success I had in my career in business, this was my happiest moment.

Good luck in the contest. You have my vote.
Robert

Well, to have that experience with your granddaughter, it would help to have a full page spread written about you in the newspaper! LOL I, too, sign in as a writer.I think 1300+ columns and a book qualifies me to the title!

What a wonderful story. I never heard of this poet. I am going to try to find some of his poems. The fact that he enjoys working with children puts another feather in his cap.

Thank you. I did see his Poetry for a Man's Soul on Amazon. I don't think he's the greatest poet, but the way he touches kids really touches me. I wrote that 20 years ago and we're still friends.

I greatly enjoyed your beautiful, personal story about your experience meeting the famous black poet William Arndell, as well as the biographical information you provided about this very creative and sensitive humanitarian.

I liked your introduction, where you described the conversation you had with your friend, before you met him.

"You call me before the sun is up to tell me there's a pickup truck in a parking lot? I
believe. I believe. Now can I go back to sleep?"

A tiny spag:

In the paragraph starting, "He was honored in 1999," go down to "You want to' know what the big thrill was?" The "to" has a stray apostrophe.

Thank you for informing me about Arndell, a fine poet and human being. Your account is well written and I enjoyed the way you segued into rhyming verse, twice during your story. Very well done!
