I know what you are describing about those home movies made before the digital era, Liz. I enjoyed your description of how you remembered and how that changed over time. I believe that happens to most. Your words flow well with great imagery.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

Very nice. Yes, memories can do funny things over time. Too bad or good that home movies can remind us of the real events. Your narrator's reactions felt very natural. Well done.

Haha this is very funny. The constraint between parental memory and adolescence rudeness. You convey that so well here. Thanks for sharing this and have a great day

This is cracking me up! Mainly because I am going through old VHS tapes now and HOPING that when I send them to be converted to DVD, they are things my memory has cherished correctly! This is an adorable story of what you REALLY end up finding out...mainly that your memory isn't quite as sharp as you thought it was! Love the following:

"Not sure of the year; probably mid-1980's. Sandra and Tommy would have been going into second...? maybe third...? grade.
Here it comes! My voice-over: First day of school, September, 1994.
Ninety-four! I could have sworn it was in the eighties."

Still laughing! Great job!

In this time of living on memories due to the isolation from that stinking Virus, it is fun to read your piece. We only have one movie of our children from the 80's also. They were playing outside and it's a joy to remember. Now we can't even see our great-grandchildren who live just a few miles away. Gets lonely.
Your story line led me into the punch line in a gentle, logical way that kept my curiosity. Very good work Elizabeth.

Thank you! Glad to provide a bit of levity. Isolation: not for me. Thus far I remain defiantly unconfined. I work at a food pantry==essential service==so I can and do mingle. Time enough for quarantine if/when IT gets me. Hang in there as best you can. LIZ

    good for you, Lady!
I'm an old lady and stay away from my granddaughter because she has a newborn and a one year old. Don't know how I'd get the virus except that my hubby does the shopping and can be exposed. Just would hate to see those little ones sick. They say that most who do get it don't die except the elders and tiny ones. So you are probably right not to worry if you are somewhere 'in between'.

Now that is a good idea to put home movies on DVD. Cassette tapes, large and small floppy disks,VCRs, and the video tapes are more of things no longer found. The good old days and history are lost forever, if we cannot update the format.

Hello again! Yes--lots of people have been converting for the reason you give. Some may come to wish they'd let their mis-memories prevail. Cheers. LIZ

I hired a video place to turn my home movies into a DVD.I hoped one day to add music and dialogue, but never got around it. You have captured the choppiness of home movies and I love the last line.

Hahaha... teenagers! My father was always sticking a camera in my face, sometimes at unwelcome moments.
You may well have embroidered this story, but you captured the reality of mis-remembered situations through rose-tinted glasses; and the anticipatory thrill of seeing old home movies again.

I got four freebies on this today. Sans promotion, they normally delist the piece after two reviews. These came so fast, I guess I beat the system for a change. I did indeed embroider the story for entertainment purposes! Cheers. LIZ

This short story, Home Movies, is so funny as it most likely represents what we'll all see when and if those eight millimeter reels or VHS tapes get updated and the reality of the past is made clear.

Our memories I guess can be distorted somewhat, but this? LOL I hope mine are not that ridiculous. This was indeed an eye opener, but my memories I know are how I remember them... I hope?
