I love this line: giving us a sliver of hope that someday we'd be able to plunge into the sapphire sky. It also made me think of birds in cages thinking aloud. This is the kind of short short that overlaps science fiction and reality. Nice post.

Excellent entry, Stan--and so timely.
Just how long can we expect people to coop themselves up?
I suppose that depends on the death toll.
For me, it's easy. I'm a hermit even amid the most sociable of times.
Best of luck, Stan.

Peace, Lee

I was thinking the same thing. I could give Bigfoot a run for his money when it comes to social distancing. Since I've lost half my business, I have plenty of time to write.

reply by humpwhistle on 23-Mar-2020
Sorry about your business, Stan. But glad you have more time to write.

This story is so hard hitting. It really scared me but that's not a bad thing. An excellent fash fiction. Good luck in the competition. Stay safe. Jen.

Thanks so much. I find myself saying "Stay safe," too. But it reminds me of the movie, "The Purge."

It is a scary thing and no telling how long it will last. Your contest entry is in good form. I enjoyed reading although it was eerie. I believe there are some who act like this man did and may end up regretting their ways. Thanks for sharing and best wishes. Respectfully, Jan

This is interesting. The government has the whole world on lockdown and living in fear. I'm not one of those because I've been near death many times and my God has rescued me every time. I hope they find a vaccine soon. My hope and faith isn't in that though. My hope is in the Lord. Thanks for sharing this well written work. Well done!

Hello Stan. This is a very well conceived and written Flash. Your narrative is interesting and you use strong words and phrases to tell the story. The capper is the surprise ending of the story that did catch me by surprise. Exceptional flash fiction. Good luck in the contest.

Robert

We have special "Senior Hours" at a supermarket on Tuesday at 06:00 for one hour. That's my only outing for the week. One hour to get supplies. Robert

What a very well-written chapter, very relatable. I'm sure we will all feel that way before it's over. We don't have a stay at home order yet but are strongly suggesting for everyone who can stay at home do. I had to go to the store yesterday, the trip made me feel like a germaphobe between social distancing, and sanitizing my hands every few feet. The items I chose were taken from the back. Ok, so I might've overdone it a bit. Great story. Good luck with your contest.

Great flash fiction writing! That virus at least gives us something to write about and think on. People do come to the point of chucking everything o the wind to get a bit f reprieve.

I hope it never gets to that point in this world. There's just too many unanswered questions, and not enough supplies. I didn't see a thing wrong with your FF. Great job. Shirley

Gosh, I hope you flash fiction doesn't come to pass. I'm sure you making fun of all the hype over this virus. I'm glad we can still laugh. Seriously, I wonder how long can we endure. I'm afraid a lot of people will go crazy and do something foolish if it goes on too long. Nicely written.
