This is a really interesting piece. I feel like life's whole journey is figuring out who you are. And what makes it complicated is that you are always changing. I'm not the same person I was at 20 years old. Similar, but not the same. Love this piece because it's thought provoking. That's my favorite kind of piece to read. Something that makes me think.

The motto of my high school was To Thine Own Self Be True. As you so eloquenly pointed out in your poem. we don't know, however, who we are until we reach that certain point in our lives when we realize - you know who you are NOT. You're not who everyone else says you are. Nor, are you who they want you to be. You finally break through that chrysalis and morph into the butterfly you were meant to be. I was in my mid 30's...
This piece really resonated with me.

I was in my late 20's. I am so pleased is resonated with you. After all when we write it is to reach another heart that is like thinking. I love the philosophy that stirs poets and I am honored to think that I am among so many talented writers here on FS. Thank you for your articulate and detailed review June.

Your vividly descriptive, thoughtful poem tells of a journey so many must make--to become what they were meant to be, wish to be, instead of what others SAID they were. The young can't let their elders put them in a box!

I enjoyed reading your poem and I agree, it's only when we have had more experience of life that we finally find out who we are. We think we know when we're small, but childhood is such a small part of our lives. A well written piece.

Your poem is very interesting. I think most of who I am was instilled in me as a child, my values were my parents as well. I try to be true to myself, although at times I will lie to myself about how I might look in certain Jean's of my swimsuit.

You are making light of the subject. Good. However, there are times when we really need to identify with who we are.
Thank you for your review and your comical comments.

I agree. I joke around, but I think that having a deeper sense of self will help you navigate the obstacles that will come your way. Truly you have touched upon a truth we should all learn.

Excellent message for resolving self doubt which plagues so many people. A positive poem of hope. I enjoyed the read. No edits or adjustments necessary.

So very true Ralf.

Examine what is false or true
That entertains your mind
The authentic way you really think....."

Excellent philosophy my friend. :) Bob

The message of this excellent poem is so true. I remember, especially in my teen years, wondering what the world was all about. I really should have been wondering what I was all about because I was just drifting and had no clue. It most often does take the passing of some years and the acquisition of some wisdom to acquire a true feeling about who we are and are still becoming. I love that you've concluded your posting with a quote from Shakespeare! :-)

Well, I wish I had a six to bestow on you, because this is awesome and so adequately speaks the truth! Your visual choice is great (Cleo is great!) and you wrote this free verse (my favorite form!) with great clarity. I love it! Change nothing about it and if anyone suggests otherwise, ignore them. It is perfection as it is.

Oh, thank you. You know this site so well. When one author might give 6 stars another will nitpick. I will certainly listen to your wise words that i appreciate, so much.

How really does one tear apart someone's poetry? It is such a personal thing from the heart. I do not think I have ever even given a 4 on poetry. I sure have received a few though! If I don't like it or totally don't get it, I just skip it!
    Wendy :)

a good strong and wise poem
it is true that one should never view themselves through someone else's looking glass
we eventually come into our own space within our own heart and then the world we create about us shows signs that "we were there"
