Shotgun 22? No, shotguns are gauges. 10-20-16- 12, 22 is a rifle. Never used for hunting birds unless you are Annie Oakley.
Your story is funny. Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed reading it.

The hunters were clueless! Thanks for the review. Someone else told me it's not a rifle it's a shotgun. Well, what do I know? I'm in the dark. LOL.

reply by Ben Colder on 31-Oct-2020
    I assure 22 is a rifle. I am a hunter.

This is a very funny story and a good entry for the short story contest. John sounds like a fun person to be around. I love the "good ole boy" stories that are exaggerated and haveing a line like " having a 22 mounted."

You open with a nice warm feeling of relating a story with friends and that invites us in to share in it. I like the way you unfolded the story; it all starts us innocently enough, but then the narrator drops into that field and the bull charges and it turns into a heart pounding moment. Something you won't forget. You can't be too careful. estory

That was a great story of 'The One That Got Away' and the, one, was John!! LOL. You don't mess with cows and bulls! I thought you were going to say when the gun fired, he shot a bird down. :)) This was a lovely story for the contest, with a great moral. Good luck in the contest. :)) Sandra xx

Thanks for this fine review. That's a good idea about the bird, but what would be the chances? Your comments are truly appreciated.

reply by sandramitchell on 31-Oct-2020
That is the thing, although it's a chance in a million, that one chance is there! :))

I had to laugh. The whole story right down to the cattle I could clearly see in my mind. I've had a few of those experiences myself. What makes it good is John's ability to laugh at himself. One sentence caught my attention: "I did not stop to think just hightailed it to the..." It looks to me an "and" needs to be inserted between "think just." Nothing else caught my attention. Nice work. Thanks for sharing your story. Good luck. Good writing and stay well.

This was an interesting and humorous story that flowed smoothly from the beginning to the end with the use of 'tight' language. It's good John's friends found him when they did, or the story may have ended differently. As the daughter of a hunter, I know you are right. Hunting cannot be taken lightly. Good story.

Yours is a very interesting and attention-holidng story. I liked it when you said: "Now this is John's story" (with a wink.)
I don't know what the other guys' stories were but I like John's. :)

"grass was hitting the tops of my calves" is a really nice sense image. Any of us, like myself, who grew up walking in fields has that image etched into our memories.
I also liked the image of the "clomping hooves." Clomping is a good work because it sounds like what it is. (I know there's a word that refers to words that sound like the sound they make but I can't remember what it is.)
I loved the honest of John's story. It could have been more exaggerated but that would only have made it smaller, not bigger.
Excellent job.

well, that is some story with quite a build-up.
I thought, for sure, you were going to say, when the gun went off, it hit a cow. But I'm sure you're thankful that it didn't. A mounted Hereford head on the wall wouldn't be very cool. :) just kidding.
It did sound, however, like your husband and friends had a lot of fun in their spontaneous weekends. And you're a patient and loyal wife!
An enjoyable read.

This is hilarious! It is well told and a very wonderful and fun break from the seriousness of most writings and goings on today. Super job and a good write for the short story contest!
