Your work is brilliant and sobering. You make me very glad I live in Australia. So many times we hear it now we almost go on auto pilot as we roll our eyes at the frustration many good people must feel in your country Mark.
Perfectly rhymed and with some difficult syllables and clever pairs. I envy, admire and very much like your style.
You've managed to get a very serious message across without giving me "rolling eyes". The closer makes the reader realise this can happen ANYWHERE anytime and I'm not sure you can put this can of worms away, ever.
Not a lot to look forward to and I understand why a lot of prayer is needed. Well constructed, articulated and delivered. Sixer all day. BTW my favourite rhyme was the "business/Christmas". Too clever.

Hello there, Mark

I think it's fair to say that regardless of whose sitting on the throne, we will always have a tiny minority of people who will wake up one morning and go out of their way to commit the ultimate crime. Of course, there are many reasons for doing so, but it seems to me that when you have a leader who spits in the faces of and rouses hatred among his fellow countrymen, then those who are made impressionable by these fecking powerful loonatics are indeed more likely to commit heinous crimes.

I'm a Brit and can feel the tension currently rearing its ugly head across the pond.

An interesting write, Mark, and I agree with you wholeheartedly.

Kind regards

tracey

Thanks so much Tracey for taking the time to read and comment. I agree - mental illness will always be with us. It seems though, that it's often a predisposition in search of some fringe ideology to attach to. And our current political climate combined with social media offer a lot of options.

Mark, as you know I have enjoyed a lot of your posts and I felt we were friends, tho on different sides, politically. But evil is a strong word. I really would like to know what you think is evil about Trump? I can list all the good things for blacks, Hispanics, all Americans that he has accomplished - all fact checkable.
He loves this country, has no ax to grind, donates his salary. Is smart and protects American interests. He hires women in top, executive posts. Has reduced taxes and helped those who lost jobs due to Covid. I could go on. Truly, I'm not trying to get in an argument, i just do not understand the reasoning for your statement. What about him do you think is evil? I think calling him that calls for some proof.
I can prove what's evil about Biden, Pelosi and Kamala.

Let me start by saying that I love your posts, respect your views, and always look forward to your reviews. As for what I think is evil about Trump? Here goes:

Seems to me his entire life has been devoted to the pursuit of wealth, power, fame, and sex by any means necessary ? and there is plenty of documentation of his cheating, lying, adultery, lasciviousness, and cruelty. Sometime that documentation is in the form of court records, but very often it?s in the form of his own words.

Let?s start in the eighties. Trump would buy rent-controlled buildings and move to have tenants illegally evicted. He was, by all accounts a nightmare of a landlord. Here?s A CNN story chronicling that period. https://money.cnn.com/2016/03/28/news/trump-apartment-tenants/

He routinely stiffed contractors, resulting in over 3,500 lawsuits against him. Here?s a USA Today story chronicling those dealings.
    https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2016/06/09/donald-trump-unpaid-bills-republican-president-laswuits/85297274/

He paid $25 million to settle a lawsuit related the fraudulent practices of Trump University.

There are other stories of his deceit, that are on a smaller scale, but nonetheless are indicative of his character. Like the marker on one of his golf course properties that allegedly commemorates the ?River of Blood? a famous civil war battle that never happened. When Trump was confronted about the fact that no documentation existed that any such battle ever occurred and that no historian anywhere would attest that the events Trump listed on the marker were true, Trump responded by saying that there was no proof that it didn?t happen, so he could say that it did. Here?s his quote: ?That was a prime site for river crossings. So, if people are crossing the river, and you happen to be in a civil war, I would say that people were shot ? a lot of them. "How would they know that?" Mr. Trump asked when told that local historians had called his plaque a fiction. "Were they there?"

Time magazine had to tell him to take down faked magazine covers (that showed Trump being praised) from his properties. Here?s The Guardian story documenting that https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jun/28/time-magazinetrump-fake-covers-golf-clubs

He famously used, and he was fined for this, money from his charity to purchase portraits of himself. https://news.artnet.com/art-world/trump-foundation-lawsuit-painting-1380817

Then there?s the sex. Here?s a story where Miss Universe contestants complain about how creepy it was to have Trump come backstage while they were dressing. Trhttps://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/a-timeline-of-donald-trumps-creepiness-while-he-owned-miss-universe-191860/

Trump later bragged about this in an interview with Howard Stern. . ?You know, no men are anywhere. And I?m allowed to go in because I?m the owner of the pageant. And therefore I?m inspecting it? Is everyone OK? You know, they?re standing there with no clothes. And you see these incredible-looking women. And so I sort of get away with things like that,?

He also bragged about his sexual promiscuity during the eighties. Here?s that quote: ?It?s amazing, I can?t even believe it. I?ve been so lucky in terms of that whole world, it is a dangerous world out there. It?s like Vietnam, sort of. It is my personal Vietnam. I feel like a great and very brave solider,?

And then there?s the famous New York Post headline from 1990 ? it features Marla Maples, talking about Trump, saying ?Best Sex I Ever Had?. Even though Trump was married to Ivana at the time, he was so flattered by the headline that he promoted it.

I?ll assume that the Billy Bush tape and the Stormy Daniels episode are well-enough documented that they need no citations

Birtherism ? When he was on his Obama-is-a-Kenyan-born-Muslim rant he said this in a Today Show interview. ?I have some real doubts,? He claimed to have sent his own investigators to Hawaii, where Obama was born. "I have people that actually have been studying it and they cannot believe what they're finding."

Except that he didn?t have people investigating in Hawaii because he knew there was bothering to investigate. Later he would tell Bill O?Reilly, ?People have certificates; he doesn?t have a birth certificate. Now, he may have one, but there?s something on that birth . . . maybe religion, maybe it says he?s a Muslim. I don?t know. Maybe he doesn?t want that. Or he may not have one, but I will tell you this: If he wasn?t born in this country, it?s one of the great scams of real time.?

And then there?s the time he mocked the disabled reporter ? here?s the clip reporter https://www.nbcnews.com/video/donald-trump-appears-to-mock-disabled-reporter-574777923731

Can you imagine what you would say to one of your children if you saw them doing something like that to a kid on a playground? Trump would later say that he didn?t know the reporter was disabled, though the reporter claimed that he and Trump had been on a first name basis prior to that incident, I?m thinking that Trump was lying when he said he didn?t know. Just one of the over 20,000 lies trump has told since taking office https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/07/13/president-trump-has-made-more-than-20000-false-or-misleading-claims/

It also seems that Trump lavishes praises on all the ?best people? (Omarosa?) that he has brought onto his team ? until they dare to criticize him ? then they become awful, terrible people.

Coronavirus. Trump said this on February 10th: ?Now, the virus that we?re talking about having to do ― you know, a lot of people think that goes away in April with the heat ― as the heat comes in. Typically, that will go away in April. We?re in great shape though. We have 12 cases ― 11 cases, and many of them are in good shape now.?

12 cases! Imagine if we had acted intelligently and decisively back then! But he thought it would miraculously go away ? here?s the actual quote ?Looks like by April, you know, in theory, when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away.?

Then in March, the Grand Princess cruise ship is docked near San Francisco with sick patients, and, rather than let them on shore where they could be treated ad quarantined, he prefers to keep the on the ship, because, once they are on shore, they?ll be counted as US Corona cases and that might make him look bad. Eventually, he reluctantly agrees to let them off the boat ? here?s his quote:
?They would like to have the people come off. I?d rather have the people stay [on the ship]. But I?d go with them. I told them to make the final decision. I would rather ? because I like the numbers being where they are. I don?t need to have the numbers double because of one ship that wasn?t our fault.?

It wouldn?t be the first time he doesn?t want to do the right thing because the number might go up and he might look bad. Imagine if he had take the advice of medical professionals back then, when the numbers of cases were in the hundreds ? he showed no leadership and now, over 180,000 are dead.

Remember when the journalist Jamal Khashoggi was murdered in the Saudi embassy? The CIA concluded that could not have happened without the knowledge of Saudi prince Muhammad bin Salman. The Atlantic noted - President Donald Trump, however, isn?t sure, at least in public. ?Maybe he did and maybe he didn?t,? he mused in a written statement peppered with his signature exclamation marks. Even more freewheeling in interviews, he has been clearer, saying, ?I really want to believe? the crown prince?s denials. After all, there?s so much at stake: $110 billion worth of arms sales, by Trump?s estimation (one that critics say is exaggerated). American values reduced to the value of arms sales? That?s true-to-form transactional Trump.

Not the first time Trump failed to confront the evil of foreign dictators. The most recent being his failure to follow up on American intelligence reports that Trump?s pal Vladimir Putin may have rewarded Afghan militants who killed American soldiers.
I could go on and on ? remember the Caravan of Central American and Mexican illegals that was preparing to invade the US? Funny how that never happened and we heard no more about it once the mid-term elections were over. Ted Cruz? father? Charlottesville? Race baiting? Fear mongering? Xenophobic? Yes ? he is evil.

    Mark,
I appreciate your answering me and taking the time to express your opinion and list your documented reasons.
My only rebuttal to that as far as misdeeds go, is Biden and Kamala have their share, also.
My opinion is based on his actions, his accomplishments that have all benefited this country. I think many past presidents have been unfaithful husbands, to me what's important is his loyalty to America and its people. Joe Biden will do what those around him tell him to, until he no longer can. They are socialists. I would think that, alone, would deter voters, and defunding the police? Have people gone crazy?
I live alone on a corner in a big city. The other day I bought a pistol and have signed up for lessons so if need be, I can defend myself. No one has the right to take it away from me.
I am sorry to read that about Trump, but his actions as our President have been strong - which we desperately needed - and pro America, also desperately needed.
I plan to keep enjoying your sense of humor, and again, thank you for taking the time and effort to respond.
    Katharine

Your poem has a nice steady rhythm, and you expressed yourself.
That being said, I respectfully disagree! Trump is by no means perfect, but he is not evil.
And the boy did not go to the rally to kill people; he was helping protect businesses; and he was an EMT and was aiding rioters who were injured. He was attacked and that's why he opened fire.

I don't quite know what to make of this poem, well I didn't until I read your notes. All the hateful things that are reported in the news and possible outcomes...are all the reasons I turned off the tv. Hearing constant bashing by both sides is enough to make anyone crazy.
It is a sad scenario, no matter who wins the election, because the hate will continue, and I am pretty sick of that. Adults acting like kids and kids killing because they are full of hate. Very sad, but I still think your poem is important, so we consider how we want to change the world for the better.

Hi Mark, I do not blame you for having another pint of view to what Fox news puts out, likewise their is someone with the opposite view who gets sucked in the the rubbish that ABC and the main five channels put out or don't put out on a regular basis, in your words Trump is evil which is a form of hatred, Whether you like it or not and you must admit even before he was president this was the norm, pure hatred..Now with the Trump-Russia scandel being exposed with the first prosecution I wonder will anything dent your view on Trump being elected democraticly ,as this was just unexceptable for the losers. A very good thought out review, and don't come back with, what does Englishman know about it,I follow your politics daily and have been there twice, however I realise you are living through it and have first hand experience .Many thanks for sharing. kind regards Colin

Thanks Colin for you thoughtful comments. I agree that the political discourse, in our country at least, had gotten more vitriolic even before Trump. What seems different in the last 5 years or so is that a much higher percentage of people get their news primarily, sometimes exclusively, from the internet, especially Facebook and Twitter. As much as people may not like mainstream media, at least there is some degree of professionalism and fact checking that goes on there.

We've always had conspiracy theories and fringe groups, but the seem to get more "air time" and less push-back on the internet, and people who want to believe Q-Anon and the like, can go through their days without ever encountering an alternate point of view.

reply by Colin John on 31-Aug-2020
Thanks Mark for your generous reply, always good to talk, I agree with most of what you say, here in England Facebook was mainly responsible for people interacting like never before, now you cannot say "boo to as goose"
because of the victories of Farage then followed by trump in 2016. The clampdown has been swift and quick as you are probably aware. To have a point of view and to share is a privilege, when it is being censored and another view is pushed forward ignoring the other we have what we have today. I am a socialist and non-believer and can see through this situation where hatred by others has and is still being spread...Cheers for the conversation mate and good luck with your writing, Cheers Colin

Hello, Mark,

Bravo!!!! I'm so glad you wrote this beautiful and well written poem based on the horrible state of affairs in America. It makes me depressed. I avoided the RNC but saw bits here and there in real news channels, not fox. Enough to make me sick.

What happened to Jacob Blake and the thousands black men and women before, is outrageous and unacceptable. No justice no peace. Kyle Rittenhouse and all the privileged white criminals are treated differently than blacks. It's outrages. Trump encourages this kind of evil racist hate crimes. I hate Trump with all my heart and I'm terrified he is going to get elected again. 12 more years of him in addition to his children...could be 40 more years. I grew up in Spain in the 60s. We had general Francisco Franco, a dictator. He reigned until he died of old age. I know how bad it can get, as Michelle Obama said..it can get a lot worse. I receive social security disability and I'm afraid with Trump's plan for payroll tax cut, SSDI will be exhausted in a year, and SSI in three.

You expressed the way I feel very eloquently. Thank you.

Hugs,

Gypsy

Thanks Gypsy. It seems to have reached the point where Trump doesn't even try to mask the racism that fuels his base. I wish I could say that, given his total incompetence, it is inconceivable that he could be re-elected, but I've learned that my fellow Americans are not as noble and high-minded as the Fourth of July speeches would have us believe.

Yes, I agree. I'm afraid he will be reelected or he will rig the outcome.

    Take care,

I like that you are writing about this. But I think that the picture of the gun boy is a way to encourage the mentality of some sick people. They crave to be in the nes, to be known, to be celebrated...Insanity of a mal adjusted ego.
