From the tone of this fine writing,..the solemn way it is told, this reader can see how The story itself affected you. Thank you for sharing this. Loren

I love this beautiful tribute to the working man. It's bittersweet, but I bet people like my dad have better working conditions because of your grandfather. My father worked in a factory for 30 years, and I remember as a small child going to visit the picket lines in my pj's with my mom and siblings.
I am so much for unions and better working conditions.
Thank you for your wonderful story!

I loved your little story about Zayde. I am a full time writer of Jewish Historical Fiction who got started right here on Fanstory about ten years ago. I highly recommend that you write some stories about Zeyde's life. I would love to read them. You might even consider putting them together and publishing a book of short stories.

Thank you for sharing about how your husband's grandfather made a difference for safety and good working conditions for workers in his new homeland. I was intrigued by "Zayde" because Hebrew for grandfather is "Saba" and grandmother is "Safta." I guess it may be related to the word for old 'zaken.' Usually, Yiddish has a lot of common words with German but not in this case!
Welcome to Fanstory. Appreciate you writing about historical/biographical story!

Thank you for your kind comments. I know the word used for grandfather is Zayde and the grandmother is Bubbie (not sure of the spelling. What also I found fascinating was the small stones placed on the gravestones. While I researched and found different reasons, I loved my mother-in-laws reason that was more from the heart. It is because "someone visited, someone cared."

Those are memorial stones. Stones are preferred because flowers fade. When we visited Israel last year, we took the memorial stones of our neighbor and placed them in various places. I like the stone idea very much!

As a Roman Catholic, I never heard of this until Zayde's resting place. However, I found using the stones whether it is a substitute for flowers, she told me this also or leaving them as a visit. Leaving the stones is the most beautiful and caring custom that I have ever heard. I put stones on my mom and dad's grave when we visit.

That's beautiful! And I like the painted stones, too.

This is a sweet tribute to your hard working Zayde. He and his friends did contribute and passed on a legacy of hard work and principles. I enjoyed the write and the story within.

Very interesting. There is no doubt the early contributions made by men like Zayde in improving working conditions, labour laws and safety for future generations of workers.

Notes

What they found is harsh working conditions and low wages that left them working in dangerous conditions in factories for low wages.

- note the repeating of words. It is here and other places.

You story made me laugh reading the part about the stones that carried their political views and the life they had in Eastern Europe. "They are and were socialists and yes, even a smattering of harmless Communists, as my husband says, "cannot organize a wedding, never mind a revolution."
So, when they buried Zayde today, the old part of the cemetery tells the story of these men.

Even in their graves these men wanted to have the last word.

These men lie under stones engraved with their protests: "Defender of the working man" "Fight for labor" "Support Labor" "fair wages" " Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings.
