I think it is beautiful and heartfelt, and this is what we all yearn for. Peace, equality, safety, food, warmth and family ... surely we are all the same in this, and can learn to love each other as fellow human beings? Very well expressed. Thank you.

Victor: so glad that you have time to sing and share time with your children. I like how the shovel shines. ((change one to shovel from hovel))
Let the Lord
bring a shine
on my hovel,
I agree we all want the same thing but yet we fight. Go for the love!

Thank you for sharing your social commentary. I admired your "put a shine on my shovel" and "my hovel". I also enjoyed your painting and presentation and think you should turn the free verse into a Gospel song. Cheers and dream on- Joan

I love the metaphor of the shovel, that when it's new it shines, but when the sweat of the brow and the dirt of the earth cake on it, the shine is hidden, but it's still there, beautifully written my friend, your daughter is the light of your life, as mine are to, my granddaughter adds to the gloss, Well done, blessings Roy

I like your painting, too, Victor. If we could stop governments from going to war, and let people live their lives in peace and freedom, this world would be a joy to live in. As it is, we are all sent out to fight our neighbours, people we don't know, who have done nothing to hurt us personally. It's a sin, and so wrong. I thought you expressed it well in your poem. :)) Sandra xx

I teach first grade at an underprivileged school. The other day during circle time a little girl touched my arm and pointed to my blood veins. She asked what they were. I told her and told her everybody has them. She said she didn't. I turn her arm over and showed her. They weren't easily seen because of her dark color. She did find them. Then she said, "I'm dark because my brother puts stuff in my drinks so I become darker." Oh my!!! Enjoyed your poem.

I am so grateful for people like U.
Especially so, because teachers make such a difference. I think more than they have any idea.

Nicely done Victor, said well and true, peace and the love of family and neighbor are the top two most desired things out of life before any other human non-sense that Governments and insanity manipulates and bastardizes out of molehill into a mountain of which we can surely do without. May we all get down to the basics of life, "Man is dust and to dust he shall return"! giovanni

I like the symbolism of the shovel - perhaps to be interpreted in different ways - after all, shovels also dig graves.

However, the strongest theme that shines (like a shovel) here, is rejection of war and social unrest in favour of family love and understanding. There is a marked division between first and second halves which strengthens this message.

Steve

Victor:

Your poem is personal for everyone, and we should all strive for a brotherhood and sisterhood here on earth. Your words are so poignant, and the shape they make is nice.
I love the photo with its autumnal colors (I don't know if that has any significance).
Excellent poem. It's difficult to love sometimes, and very easy to hate. We should choose the road with the most resistance. Love and Friendship. I am a recluse, and even I know that love is the answer.
Good luck in the contest, and with all your writing.
Cindy

    I am, actually sorry,
    for you being a recluse.
I hope I did not offend.

Not at all, Doug. I?ve accepted my lot. Besides, I get out every once in awhile.
To me, recluse just means not a social person. Thank you for asking.

This is such a soul-filled poem that taps the depths of what makes us all human--regardless of nationality, skin color, culture, or creed. We all do essentially want the same things as you so eloquently put it. Excellent free verse.
