Kids are so different nowadays. They love to text yet they don't like writing because writing itself is solitary while texting is not. Kids' brains need endorphins. They need the immediate feedback. A scientist said that the social networks made us in permanent seizure because of the constant endorphins hits.

Well done.

I really enjoyed this. It was a very entertaining story, delving deeper into the subject of writing regarding why, how, what, etc., including all the different methods of latching for safekeeping all the inspiration thoughts going through a writer's mind.
The story gives hope to those of us who do not confidence in ourselves regarding writing, and reassures us in a way that lacking confidence (and all the fears that go along with the passion of writing) happen with many others, not just ourselves.
Very best wishes in the contest!

    C Gale,
Have no fear no college mentor used to say- everyone has something to say and their own way of saying it. I took that idea into my classroom and never let it go.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me.

This was a good story. You used wonderful descriptive imagery and visuals. Your characters are well defined, and I liked their interaction. Great use of a dialogue too.

I wish you a lot of luck in the contest.

That's so cute - they don't bring an apple to the teacher anymore -they give coffee! Enjoyed the encouraging and inspiring call to write. Great use of the context of a writing class and loved all the "sipping" action tags. Best wishes in the contest!

    Iyenochka,
The coffee sipping and class reticence to write was real. Also real is the excitement of getting kids explore the writer within. By the end of the school year many of the roadblocks were dismantled by the kids themselves. So much creativity is unleashed by the young when they can write without judgement. As their teacher......I sure enjoyed the ride.
Thank you so very much for your support and cooments.

You must get a lot of free coffee! I loved this insight into a classroom. I could see the half asleep students in your classroom. I could see them yelling out concerns. Can't believe someone would admit to being a bad writer. Foreshading the final grade. Great job - I enjoyed this.

    Ahhh Michael,
I always loved a challenge! To motivate kids who love to write or want to write takes different motivators.....but to get kids who hate to write or think they can't write or HORRORS...think they have nothing to say...to actually bring something up to your desk with a grin...Well that is an A+ for the student and an A++ for the teacher.
Loved my kids and their hesitancies and their triumphs.
Thank you for your comments about The Write Stuff.

Your essay brings back my own days of teaching English 101 to reluctant writers. I really like how you wind that coffee-sipping motif through the whole essay. I also admire the teacher here whose insights about WHY write were well-grounded in her own experience. A solid entry in this contest. Rod

    Rod,
This retired and missing her students teacher, thanks you very much for your comments about The Write Stuff. I was so fortunate to work in a school system that encouraged creative teaching- and thus it spilled over to the kids with their creative ideas/thoughts.
Thank you so much for your support.

    Rebecca,
It was such a wonderful piece to play with- writing about a class who started out not liking to write. I can say with unbridled truth- my kids ended up their school years....loving to write! Our classroom was a safe environment to express what they felt- grades were not given just on following grammatical rules....but on rules of passion and courage.
Thank you for sharing your comments.

This work has reached the exceptional level
This is a wonderful story, getting to the heart of why writing should be encouraged.

I relate to this summary: "To me writing is when you put down on paper what you truly feel; and let it go into the world, into other people's minds and ears. It is when you lay bare your feelings and take a risk. It is when you are out there with your behind blowing in the wind for all to see and read. And the verdict can be that you are liked, or you are disliked, or heaven forbid - you are ignored!

Good advice to texting youngsters: You are going to have to dig a little deeper than that!

I liked your instruction in closing on how to become 'teacher's pet' with a coffee delivery.

    Lisa,
One of the terrific aspects of teaching is the encouragement of kids imaginations...and in so doing, foster their self confidence. Writing is a great way to do that.
Thank you so much for your wo fearful insights.

Hello Sammie.

I enjoyed the style of the post because of the dialogue between teacher and student. Students hope to ask unanswerable questions. That is the daily victory for them.

In addition to style, I appreciate your content and found a statement that rings true to me: "Yes-everyone! My theory is- write what you know. Write what you feel. Say it!"

If you have a moment, please look at my writing philosophy. It is a very short sentence.

Good luck in the contest.

Robert
