Interesting reading I felt like I was there with the characters watching thru the rose garden what was going on .It makes me want to read the next chapter.

I love this passage:""Perhaps I will do as a rose does when the sun vanishes: close my petals and pray for light's return," Thara said, brushing her hair back behind her ears. Where every other court beauty wore some complicated hairstyle, the thorn knight had left hers long and loose." , it brings an air of mystery. This almost reminds me of a Jane Austan novel I read once. I think it was Sense and Sensibility (it was for a school project). Given the way you described this "Duc" character I'm not sure he should be trusted.
