This is a riot. I forgot we may have called ourselves hobos. I wrote about our Halloween trip. I said we were always bums. Now I'm not sure what we called ourselves. I do remember still having the fireplace ash stain on our faces for Mass too. This all makes me laugh. I am voting for this.

enjoyed your memoir, sort of reminded me of my past, when, as you, made homemade costumes and had the thrill of creativeness. although, we never went to mass like you, fun story to read.

This is a great little slice-of-life non-fiction piece that describes how children and teens had a hard time removing the remains of Halloween makeup for costumes in time for the next day church services. It sounds as if the Notre Dame sisters looked disapproving, but Father Crowley was just happy to have everyone show up, whiskery or red-mouthed or any other way. It brings back memories of Mom's very sticky, red-pink lipstick/rouge that we used, too, in the late 1970s. Nice read.

Children can be extremely naive and natural. It tahes a special skill to teach them, especially when events overrun themselves. The mother who scrubbed and scrubbed at her child's face probably set-up enough unhappy memories for the year to come, whereas the tolerant Father Crowley will be seen as a hero. This is very well-written and draws the reader in close.

Yes, I remember having to go to Mass on All Saints Day, but only once with leftover makeup from my gypsy costume. I also remember staying up late on New Year's Eve to celebrate my dad's January 1 birthday, then having to get up early to go to Mass to celebrate Jesus's circumcision, which I never knew the meaning of until I was in college! Cute story

Dear Mary, I promised to review your work, and did not have far to go to find this fine bit of prose.
This was a very cute story and definitely worth my time to read it, and write this review.
The only advice I can give you to improve this post, is to tell you that the space for Author's notes is usually used only for critical information that could Not Be Included in the story or poem. I hope you understand what I am trying to say.

What a beautiful Halloween tale from childhood and from an era very different from the present when costumes were cobbled together at home with so much fun !

This reminds me of the time my younger brother painted our four-year-old sister's hair green. She wasn't all that thrilled with the colour, but because it was Bart who had done it, she didn't complain. (She adored Bart), but he got a hiding for doing it. Not only for painting her hair but because it dried and stuck up in little green tufts and looked awful.
Mum had to cut it very short, but my sister didn't mind. She didn't give a fig for appearances.
Your parish priest Faher Crowley was a wise man who looked beyond the painted lines and stains on the little boys' faces to the souls beneath and welcomed them to the sacraments. A wise man indeed cheers Cass

I'm so glad that Father Crowley welcomed all the children and understood the need for creative fun the night before. Thanks for sharing this sweet memory. Since I'm not Catholic, I don't know how All Saints' Day is celebrated. Is it just regular mass? I like the idea of honoring all saints!

Yes All Saint's Day is a Holy Day of Obligation which means the day after Halloween, we are required to go to Mass.

It is absolutely hysterical that the kids attended Mass and still had most of their Halloween makeup on. I can see the children clearly, pirates, clowns and cats at the church service. This is a funny and cute tale to share.
