Bill,
Wonderful chapter about New York City. I was only there by Jet four times. I didn't get to see the nitty gritty wonderful attractions on the ground. I wish I had looked out for the Twin Towers when my flights circled the city. I could tell people I actually saw the twin towers.
Bill, you make each state essay interesting , good luck in the contest.
Best wishes,
Cindy
I have only read some of the other posts related to this book. I found this chapter interesting given your being a passenger.
Your wife and daughter can't sell the Brooklyn Bridge to anyone else, because I own the deed. If they are interested in it, we can negotiate a fair price.
I believe I will read other chapters and comment where I feel compelled.
Thanks for sharing.
Dick
You are right about the diversity of New York. You included some great points of interest, people, and attractions. I knew many of the items but it was great seeing them all in one place in honor of NY.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan
I had no idea that New York was the first capital of the United States, it goes to reason I suppose. I visited New York in the 80's. Coming from a small town, it was overwhelming at first. Once I settled in, I found so many things about it fascinating. One thing for sure, I'll never hail a taxi there again. Two blocks down I had him pull over, thought I'd have a better chance of surviving the muggers.

I know what you mean, MD, but cab drivers in Japan make them look like bumper cars.
Bill, I think you undersell New York. I'm a Dane and half American, and for twenty years I spend more than 12 days a month in that city. Not to mention all my other visits. I know it as much as any outsider can possibly do. I was evacuated from my crew hotel in the South Tower in 1993 when the first attempt on them was made. I love that city and always will.
I'm sorry you've only ever known it in the passing. I can assure you, it has a unique life on its own. Ulla:)))

You did. I just wear my feelings on my sleeve and get carried away.
Ah yes, my state. I was born and raised in New York. First in upper New York state, then on Long Island until I turned 17, joined Marines and only been back six times in 30 plus years. Still have lots of family there though..
I do love the city, but only to visit and have fun. You cannot, or should not, take your car into the city. Use Rail or subways, park your car and subway back out to it when you are done having a blast.
Good job on this, Bill. wish I had a six left. I squandered all of hem on Sunday and Monday. (: Bob

Thank you for giving this a look, Bob. I? m glad I didn?t goof it up too badly. : )
Dear Bill, you have done an incredible job of being as fair as you could about the wonders of New York (the city and the state.) I was astonished to learn how many thousands of acres were contained in the Adirondack national forest. I also appreciated knowing that Alexander Hamilton established a newspaper, and I feel with a bit of wisdom you have added that New York was filtered through your father, and the purchase of the Brooklyn Bridge.
Your awesome skill as a writer was clearly on display with this one, my crazy buddy. I totally got every reference, every innuendo. You gave me a fly on the wall view as well as a bird's eye view of a place I would love to visit myself but never will. Thanks to you, I don't have to. Much for the very reasons you pointed out that would be for me, a detriment. Good writing man.

Thank you, nomi, for the kind and meaningful review. Bill
You portrayed my home state perfectly. I grew up on its most southern location - Staten Island. BTW ... it has the highest point on the eastern coastal plain - Todt Hill (I think only 400 feet in altitude). Todt Hill was a 10-15 minute bike ride from my home and elementary school.
Minor corrections: your population figure is not correct. Most people, especially those living outside our country, equate Manhattan (New York County) as New York City. In my mind, the Big Apple generally refers to Manhattan and not the five boroughs of the City of New York.
I like how you were able to include upstate facts along with the NYC facts. Watertown, NY is home to Fort Drum, I was there twice, It's almost as far North as you can get and it snowed in August. Very nice job. Keep'em coming.
