Before you came
by Sandra du Plessis Chapter 34 of the book Potlatch Poetry
The strength of this poem to me is in its contrasts emphasized by the image of the merry-go-round and the roller coaster. The merry-go-round offers safety and predictability while the roller coaster offers a wild, thrilling experience. This becomes a metaphor for the romantic relationship the speaker discovers.
