My husband and I retired from our farm to a home in the small town (1400 residents) seven miles from the farm. My writings are usually non-fiction, slice of life essays. Raising a large family, preparing other people's tax returns and being a legal assistant for 35 years as well as being a caretaker for a loved one with dementia has given me a multitude of stories yet to be told. I wrote a weekly column for several small rural newspapers for a little more than ten years. When several family deaths occurred in a very short period of time, I decided to stop doing that for a while. My columns were always a little on the "flippant" side and my grief was not allowing that. I also quit Fan Story at that time. Now I am back - for a while at least.
Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless. Mother Teresa

mommerry: I am so happy my story was well received and understood. Someone asked - why has this not been published? Where would it have been welcomed? Any suggestions?

mommerry: Thank you very much. I originally wrote this to be performed at a high school speech contest. Didn't finish it on time for it to be used. Always wonder how well it would have done there.

mommerry: I was entering a PCH contest by "searching" for something. In that search I found the fanstory site and feel I hit the jackpot even though it doesn't mean the Prize Patrol will be ringing my doorbell. I am just getting acquainted with the site but am having a lot of fun with it. Most of what I write is non-fiction stories taken from my own life and those of my family and friends. My children learned I was submitting some of my writing and asked, "will you be embarrassing us?" My answer, "Probably." Paybacks are the pits!

kleck140: What a pleasant way to start the day with reading all those posts. I haven't learned how to get full use of this site yet, but I keep trying. I thought I would add, that I just resigned from being a Mom, Mother, Grandmother, Nana, and what ever goes with that position in life. I now want to start writing and that takes most of my time, so I had to resign all my other volunteer work, and my other positions. Seven kids, with spouses, and 23 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren,... just writing B-Cards and attending sports functions means my writing fell by the wayside. I tried this site in 2009 and didn't have time for writing so I had to resign my position as Mom, etc. :)

mommerry: I only have two families of our seven living in the area and we do not always attend everything the local grands tell us about -- we don't sit out in the cold for any events, ie: football and track. But we do try to get to at least one activity of each of those who live away - this year it was a symphony concert and a soccer game in KC. A marching band competition & bb game and grandparents day in Greendale, WI and the grands in Wichita only do stuff like run in Marathons so when we were there they took us to a Broadway production of Lion King. Hope you can still take a little time to just enjoy the greats and not feel obligated to chase after them!
