shanda lee: Most of you who may know my writing focus has been about my Father, unfortunately he passed away July,19th, and I am still coping with his loss.I have not been able to find the words to express my feelings at this point in time.Wishing everyone nothing but success in all they do.

shanda lee: So confused when I was taught "writing" I was told to use commas after words like (and, but,as well as,however, etc.) also use commas after a persons name.I have been told on here to add an extra space after commas, and when you are separating two ideas that run from the same topic. I don't mind getting criticized, but I am confused when I get different feedback from people in how I should use my punctuation placement.Almost seems like everyone is on different pages...

nor84: Use a comma BEFORE and, but, however, etc., when making a compound sentence, not after those words.
    June 11, 2013 at 12:04AM
Sally Carter: I find it's almost impossible to apply a general rule; different sentences require commas to be used in different ways.
I can imagine a sentence where I would use a comma after "and", eg, She leapt in the car and, with one final look at the old house, hit the accelerator.
I'm sure Red's recommendation is good. There are also lots of useful articles on the internet if you simply google "use of commas".

Cumbrianlass: My English teacher told me to read what I had written, or was writing, out loud. "Where there's a natural pause in speech," she would say, "is where you put the comma." I've since been told that's not correct, but it actually makes the most sense to me.

Sally Carter: Me too, Av. I like your English teacher!

Antonin70: Shanda, the best way to get your rammar and punctuation acceptable by everybody of FanStory is o ignore the lot of them and do our own thing. If it's good enough they'll like it and not bother to picks up yours spags. If they do criticise you just make up some erudite sounding piece of prose of justify what you have done. They always either give up or back off. Either way you win. But good luck on fanStory it's having chats like this with so many differen people with so many different opinions and explanations that make it worthwhile. Cheers. :) Anton.

shanda lee: A little advice to those who do reviews, reviews are based upon how well written,if the writer painted a clear image, if the writer displayed their thoughts in a comprehensive manner, and so on. Reviewers should not be rating pieces ( and low balling writers ) simply because they do not like the topic.Your judgement should be on how well the interpretation was understood from the nature of the writers piece. If you do not like the topic another writer has chosen then please just skip their work, rather than low ball it without some "constructive criticism".
May 31, 2013 at 8:24PM
webfoot: yes, shanda. I agree. it is all so subjective, so if a topic offends, a reviewer can't give an objective and good review, it would be better if the reviewer skipped over that piece.
I feel that we have people's precious lives in our hands when we review and we should be careful

Antonin70: the worst sin reviewers commit is to low ball other entries in contests they have gone in for themselves . Lots of people do it and it devalues the whole idea of a contest. Anton

shanda lee: If a person gives you are bad rating simply because they did not like the subject that was of no interest to them, then why low ball it..Just skip it and move on.If a piece I wrote needed improvements and that to me is a valid reason that I could accept that, but to rate because you don't like what I wrote about seems to be quite unfair.
May 28, 2013 at 2:34PM
nor84: It is unfair. If the rating was really low, like 1 star, sometimes the site will remove the review if you send a message under 'contact us' at the top of this screen.

If the reviewer was from a 'standard' member, those are non-dues-paying members, and sometimes they're drive-bys. If you don't want standard members to review your work, you can block them in 'advanced options' when you post.

Evelyn Fort Stewart: A piece should never be reviewed on your likes and dislikes. God loves you and so do I.

shanda lee: Some people are just Inspirational through the tragedies, and life experiences they have endured. I have met two people so far from FanStory who are Inspirational. Their stories really have opened my eyes a lot, and have much empathy for what they have had to endure in this crazy thing we all call "Life". I wish them nothing but happiness, and peace within themselves.

shanda lee: Thank- you to those who have reviewed, rated, and commented on my poems. My main focus in writing is Poems of all kinds,I am currently in the midst of writing two books, one non-fiction, and the other is fiction. I am looking forward to seeing all your feedback on anything I do submit on this site. Also, when I rate, and review others work I am looking for how they get their point across to the readers, if their title coincides with their outcome of what they have wrote. I do try to judge fairly on reviews.
