I was invited to become an instructor here on FanStory at the beginning of 2017. Since then I have offered classes in rhyme, European poetic forms, metrical poetry, free verse, tanka writing, sonnet types and creating unity in poetry writing. Several of these areas of study were added to my curriculum at the end of that first year, after Ray Griffin had bowed out. Both rhyme, metre and the European forms classes have already been repeated. Anew class on modern sonnets is planned for May and is open for signing up now. I usually advertise upcoming classes in a posted poem on the site as well as the usual announcement in "Writing Classes", so something on the modern sonnet can be expected soon.

In a moment of madness I made a New Year's resolution to write and post a tanka a day for a year throughout 2018. Unlike every previous resolution I ever made, I managed to complete this one. You can find all 365 of them them in my portfolio.

I started writing stuff back in the 1960s while serving with the Royal Marines in Aden. It was mostly humorous lyrics in those days, and I have moved on a bit since then, producing more serious poetry, although I still write the occasional song lyric.

Later I qualified as a teacher and taught in state schools in Inner London, and in private schools in the Midlands, including a year in Special Education..

I really love this site as it has given me an audience for my poetry, along with the chance of reading a very wide spectrum of poems from other members. Although I teach here, the poets on FanStory have also been my teachers. I have never stopped learning, and probably never will. I will still be there, attempting to think 'out of the box', when I return to haunt you all.

Over the the last couple of years I have been experimenting more with prose writing and have published my first novel, 'A reluctant Star' on Amazon. My second, the first of a trilogy set around a Shropshire country town should be out shortly and its sequel is currently posting on on this site.

I have no plans though, to extend my teaching activities into the field of prose writing.

December 16, 2018 at 3:25AM
Dean Kuch: Poe is still one of the most beloved American Poets all these years later and read more often than Maya Angelou and Robert Frost, Jim.
So, out of date is simply a matter of one's personal opinion, is it not?
