This is not me

by Sanku

This is not me!
I was not meant to be.

Eons ago in dreamland was a dense dark jungle,
Where our two-legged gaolers would only stumble.
But we could stroll and stalk our prey
Never ever losing once our way.

This is not me!
I was not meant to be

We played with our kittens with carefree air
We fed them and lolled on the grassy lair.
As the night unfurled, the restless owl
Tooted its eerie call at the animals on prowl.

It is not me!
I was not meant to be.

We raced after our quarry or ambled at noon
Vigilant at times and restful under moon
We hunted and ate at our own free will,
Not bits of flesh thrown through the grille.

It is not me!
I am not meant to be.

Our life was ours, not yours to stare
You watch us roar as our teeth we bare
Inside the cages we dream of our past
Eons ago there was a jungle so vast.
