Petey learns an important lesson.

Petey the Penguin

by Jessica Borras

"I don't understand, mama. Why are they so mean?" Petey the penguin cried into his mother's chest, his tuxedo ruffled and his flappers trembling.

She'd found him hiding behind a snowbank in the schoolyard. That rotten boy, Chaz, coined the phrase "Pete the Freak" and Petey's classmates ate it up.

His mother's heart broke remembering his excitement, just hours earlier, about the pizza party his teacher planned for lunch that day.

"You're just different, Petey, and that's okay. It's okay to be unique. If you don't want anchovies on your pizza, you just pick them off. Nevermind what others say."
