About an unusual visitor to my pond.

White Necked Heron

by Sandra Barlow

This white-necked heron came to my pond, stayed for half an hour, left and never came back.

I heard it arrive. It came down out of my forest, making a loud guttural sound. I ran outside, not knowing what to expect, grabbing my camera on the way.

It strode regally to my pond beside my house and fossicked about looking for fish or frogs. I took about fifty photographs of it, but I think this was the best.

The only other unusual bird that has come to my pond was a buzzard, but that one attacked my peacock and I had to shoo it away.

I was so excited to hear and see a bird that I had never seen before in real life come to my pond.
