Range of emotions
The Color Of Emotion
I awoke one day absent of feeling
The back of my eyelids
There was only dark
In a flash of red, the sun
Rudely meddled into my melodramatic melancholy
Affording me yellows to spend upon my happiness
As I saw fit and jolly.
I spent it wisely, on a buttercup
Beneath my chin
And butter for my eggs
Let the morning begin.
But too much yellow made me queasy,
Green split, wealthy but uneasy
And grimacing shades of red
Strung about my face in wrinkles on
My forehead. But I caught a peculiar conversation—
“Why so afraid,” a cardinal spoke to a worm
Hanging from an apple,
“Because you’re out to get me! If it wasn’t for
My fruit-home, I’d be…. I’d be long gone!”
“It’s just my nature, and you’re my meal,
No hard feels.”
“But there is more for you to eat, spare my life,
Spare your heart from greed!”
Overhearing this made me blue,
And in such hue my philosophical
Overtones dawned.
At one time red-wolves and fawns
Both frolicked in violets,
Maybe whales flew—after all
Firmament divided firmament—
Pangea in the sky… or erm land,
Where fish could fly
And terrestrial mammals swam
…something like that.
The cardinal ended up eating the worm
And all the other insects came
To mourn,
Passing bits of rose petals atop the tiny grave,
What little remained;
But the orange tulips
Became jealous
“Much ado about nothing”
Over attention of the roses fame.
It didn’t end there, the worms declared
War against every cardinal,
The worms lost, they hadn’t a chance.
I hope you didn’t think this was
One of those underdog tales, because it’s not.
But most of the worms for their courage
And bravery, were awarded purple hearts.
I peeked back inside my window
I’ve had enough emotion
For one day.
