Student Apathy

All the World's...

by The Cowboy Poet

He sat unmoved by Shakespeare's Macbeth;
He had his own tragedy to confront.
He diagrammed a sentence impassively
As though the importance of knowing a verb
From a subject had no meaning for him.
Oh, I tried to force the lessons into his consciousness
With little success.
Pilgrim's Progress and Donne's Meditations
Evoked little response.
I reasoned that he had no great works at home
To inspire him.
I was unaware of his everyday tragedies.
I could not sense his meditations were as profound
As Donne's and far more personal.
I looked and failed to understand
And went back to my teaching.
