The Music of Romance

by David Sumich

A note from our symphony hangs in the air
Its quiet refrain sustains what we share
As it fades in the night, it's not hard to bear
For the next one arrives caressing our stare.

Just like the last one this note moves along
Each one is singing our favorite song
A beautiful ballad so swift and so strong
A mystical rhythm that does us no wrong.

The awe of it all is that there is no band
The melody plays just by holding your hand
We dance in our arms right where we stand
No other two could make music so grand.

Artwork is original piece by me also. The flower is created from piano felt hammers.

What better thing to describe love than music as a metaphor? For our two lovers, the answer is obviously nothing! My favorites about this piece are the imagery of the notes flutter about our happy couple and the contradiction of the line "We dance in our arms right where we stand" by referencing motion and stillness in the same line where they exist in perfect harmony. Some of you may think I don't know the difference between Concerto and Symphony (one being many and one being solo) but I do, and I chose Concerto as the title because in the end I wanted to highlight and celebrate the unity of such a special love between two people where they become one.
