Capturing the artistic process

by David Sumich

Eyes of white staring back at me
They blindly ask what it is I see
Your pale face is such a mystery
I see your lock but have no key.

I speak to you but you don't speak back
I look for clues but the leads don't track
I cut and cross, poke, prod and smack
My pen the knife and on full attack.

Standing back I take a look at you
Trying to see what you've made me do
Grotesque, but lovely, and always new
Your image unfolds right on cue.

Rhyming Poetry Contest contest entry

Original artwork created by the author. Image poses (and answers) the question...Is This Art? The resounding answer of course is...This Is Art!

The first stanza starts where all art starts - the blank page, canvas, etc. With the author looking for the inspiration to start. The second stanza suggests that the quest to be creative is in itself the muse we need. The third and final stanza is a reflection on the result - beautiful art that we may not have envisioned completely when we started, but nonetheless was born through us and our intention.
