I’d seen it coming for months. That doesn’t lessen the pain much when it finally happens. Nothing really prepares you.

I dug up the spare key. I used the screwdriver I’d brought to pop open the screen door. I unlocked and opened the inner door.

The stench was overwhelming.

I tiptoed through the kitchen and peered into the living room.

He had toppled over on the couch. He looked like a giant bruise - purples and greens and yellows. Bloated and puffy.

I ran out of the house, overcome with shock. I somehow managed to be coherent when I called 911.
