Sibling Ties by Jake P.
Write A Modern Fable writing prompt entry
Once upon a time a brother and sister lived in a forest. Since Darcy was two years older than his sister, he had to take care of her. He resented it, but the code of the wizarding world... for he was a wizard, and his sister had no magical power at all... commanded that it was his duty.
Though eight year old Marcy was not magical, she was beautiful, and people everywhere admired her beauty. She sought no attention from them. She knew only that she was happy. She danced among the flowers, sang beautifully with the birds, and gloried with the colorful butterflies that were drawn to her. And she had a deep, deep love for her brother who cared for her.
Darcy enjoyed performing his magic, and people marveled at what he could do. Until Marcy began to sing and dance. They couldn't take their eyes off her. Darcy would smile and follow his sister, but deep inside a hot stone inflamed his heart. Why was he always ignored when his sister was around? He hid his feelings behind a smile, but resentment sprouted in the warmth of his burning heart. And it grew day to day.
One day his sister waded into the shallow waters of the river to play with the fishes. Suddenly a powerful current swept her away pulling her under and making her fight to the surface.
Darcy ran along the banks watching and considering how to help.
"Reach out with your arms, Marcy, and push yourself through the water toward the shore!"
"I can't. The water's too strong."
He thought that she might float if the water were thicker. His spell turned the water into blood.
And the moral of the story is blood is thicker than water.
