Young people today believe they have it so bad with the inconveniences of winter storms. They have no idea what we all endured. But for some reason when we look back, we don't just see the bad... fond memories and special times live on in our minds.

Smiles and hugs, Carol

Hey, you must be reviewing today. Sometimes I think the old ways were better. I didn't waste so much time on a computer back then. LOL

Yes, today I am not burdened down with so much of life's junk and am trying to catch up with the computer. When I write, it owns me. LOL

What? Are you a mathematician? Six cats and t w e l v e kids. What is it with your fixation on numbers? Now I am doing it. Two five stars in a row. I'm no longer Stir Crazy just bonkers!

Very lifelike. This will draw the reader in to identify: "I pulled the covers over my head and left a small hole to breathe through." Did your parents tell you,'we walked uphill both ways, in snow up to our waist.'? My mother used to have to get to school to start the woodstove. I do believe that. Someone had to do it. The uphill both ways? No too sure about that. Well written.

I remember those days as well. A huge snowstorm so we would not have school. Cooking on the wood stove and also the warmth of the wood stove to warm our toes, dry our mittens.

Thank you. Yep, we didn't have to depend on the grid in those days.

You described the snowstorm to remember well, Mystery Author. I enjoyed reading your contest entry. I like the way you contrasted your life with Sandy. Wow, a two week vacation from school. I believe the kids around there had a ball playing in the snow. Thanks for sharing this fun memory, at least the playing part, with FS. I know the farm life was hard work esp with huge drifts of snow to contend with.
Best wishes in the contest.
Respectfully, Jan

A story of survival in the harsh winter and I enjoyed your childhood remembrance as it is detailed and hopeful as friends help each other when faced with such dreadful storms, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

Hi there,

There was no heat in the upstairs of our house, so I woke to a cold, dark room - I was chatting with my wife the other day about this sort of thing. We all used to live like this and now we complain when the power goes off for half an hour and the heating cuts out. No double glazing, open fire only, no radiators... I think we've all gone soft! lol

This piece took me back... good times. I think this is my favourite I've read for the competition. Best of luck to you

Snow was a treat. I remember waking in cold rooms. I think even Mississippi had a lot of snow back then. Winters are getting milder. It sounds like your big family had a lot of work to do and a long cold walk to school. I'll bet you took it for granted back then but would hate to go though that today.

Thank you. It was just the way things were in those days. Life was much simpler than it is now.

This contest entry sort of resembled the snow storm that hit Texas last February. Only because Texas is no where close to being prepared for a snow storm. LOL My first full year of teaching, it must have been in February of 1977, we were out of school the entire month because of snow. Anyway, I enjoyed reading your entry. It brought back memories. Good luck.
