You speak from experience these words of caution and wisdom. We should be defined in life not by what we own, but by what we do. And if filled with deeds of kindness and empathy, our life would have been successful.

Just like the bible says, "The love of money is the root of all evil." How many people have died over it and how many friends are lost over it. Is it really worth it? I think not as you've so eloquently stated. You will have more peace and joy with your needs met than all of the excess that you could have. I think that you'll acquire some friends that just want to hang around you because of what you have. This is really good and I enjoyed reading this well written work. Well done!

-A well written poem
with a good topic, jaybird.
-The rhyme and imagery are good.
-You make a good point
in the first verses about
money and greed.
-A good comparison between
greed and "the scourge that shadows us."
-I like the positive examples
in verse three; they show a
much better way to live our lives.
-A good concluding couplet, too.
-Thanks for sharing.

This poem was very enjoyable to read. So simply stated. I completely agree that you don't get to hold onto your money or any material objects for that matter. Nicely done!!

I guess us folks from KY see things the same. I was born in the Cumberland, KY area in the 50's. You poem flows well. If only everyone would heed it. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Jay: You offer some great advice to your readers in this one. Greed is what constantly pulls many of us down, enough is never really enough. As you said, we certainly can't take it with us, so what's the point.

Take care, my friend...Bill

This is excellent advice to the unmotivated, on how to achieve a contented life. Not for those who "want to get somewhere," but well-written, and in iambic pentameter, yet!
Smiles,
Don

This is a warning to stay away from the vices of life. Those things that keep you from kindness and sharing. It reminds us that generosity and courtesy get you to Heaven while greed does not.
Keep writing

Yes, I think you are right. Very often we have a mistaken idea of what success really is.
Thanks so much for sharing another beautifully written poem.

How true it is that we need to live our lives the way the Lord has directed our paths He wants us to follow. We can be successful and maybe even earn lots of money. Being successful and we can say even being rich is not a sin as long as you worked hard and earned it honestly. It's not a sin to enjoy the good things money can buy, but where the sin comes in is if all you can see in life is the almighty dollar. If you willingly share the wealth you have with others who may need a hand to get on their feet. With those who have disabilities and can't get far enough to make it. If you use your money to help others, that is where you are on the right path.
