Malcolm Rothery: I am noticing more and more contests are receiving less and less participation. It is clear that some people are choosing rather silly subjects or are placing far too many restrictions on the content. Writing is an art so please let us express that without having our hands tied. You are trying to protect us from real life by saying 'no profanity, no violence no sex' etc. That may be possible in simple poetry but very difficult when trying to tell a realistic story. Fan Story is in danger of becoming sanitised. Thank You.
Jannypan (Jan) : Sponsors are allowed to make the rules. If one disagrees, then use the skip button. In effect, you are making fun of sponsors. You can create your own contest(s) at any time. So , , , , -
nor84: Malcolm, I totally agree with you. A long list of restrictive rules stifles creativity. -
FanStory: The site encourages and appreciates when site members create contests. But site members should know that contests that have very specific objectives, as pointed out, have little to no interest. On the other hand contests that have open topics do very well. The recent "Temptation" contest is a good example. It did so well that we are running it again with a cash prize. Almost all the contests with cash prizes began with a site member with a great idea. -
    Jannypan (Jan) : It's a two way street. -
FanStory: To be clear, the results of these type of contests show that authors do not want to be restricted as Malcolm has pointed out. Contest organizers should keep this in mind when creating a contest. -
giraffmang: It's also the same prompts over and over again. I think this causes fall off in participation again. The site ones come up quarterly which I think isn't too bad. -
Jannypan (Jan) : There's a haiku site contest with a deadline of June 15th. Then, there's a haiku site contest with a deadline of July 19th. Hmm, three months flies by in the space of a little more than one moth. -
giraffmang: Yep. That'll be the monthly competition which always has a load of entries not the ones which are up every week or two with 3 to 5 entries or roll over without enough entrants. -

Writing, nature, astronomy.
I began writing only 18 months ago. I had taken early retirement having become utterly disillusioned with the dead ends of pharmaceutical R&D. Lockdown gave me the space to try writing and I am loving it, but still on the learning curve. I never realised what a minefield punctuation and paragraphing could be!
I have tried other sites but found them wanting, but Fanstory gives me everything I need. A platform to publish and receive comments and suggestions from like-minded people, who, I have to say, all seem to be incredibly nice people. Thank you to all of you that have so encouraged me to carry on and be a better writer.
I spent 9 wonderful years living in South Africa, a year in Spain following the dream of owning a bar that was more a nightmare, and also Milton Keynes. I lived to tell the tale.
I have written a number of novella-length stories in the genre of horror, sci-fi and even taking a dip into children's literature and now have an (unpublished!) trilogy sitting on my Chromebook. I have also written a number of short stories and flash fiction stories, some of which have been published online elsewhere. I have tried my hand at poetry, particularly Haiku, and have surprised myself, though the current laureate has little to worry about.
I look forward to reading as many of your efforts as possible. They have been incredibly inspiring.
