The Pain They Inflict

by Denie R

I see your face,
I hear your laughter.
I wish the wish
that the drugs wouldn't
have taken you.
But it wasn't the drugs that
killed you.
Was it?
It was a family
who for generations
have abandoned their own.
A family who
whispers in your ear
"You're not good enough."
"You'll never measure up."
Oh the pain they inflict
on the unworthy.
Because of their lies
you stuck a needle in your arm.
The pain was that great.
You didn't deserve
their abandonment
just as I didn't.
And I am here
and you are gone.
And I still see your face,
and I still hear your laughter.
Oh the pain they inflict.

My nephew passed 8 months ago of a drug overdose. It wasn't the drugs that killed him it was the pain my family inflicted on him. He didn't deserve this.
