Standing at the counter
in mesh shorts and flip-flops
a big burly guy, he stood
more than a foot higher
than I. A grizzly bear
in a sleeveless Harley
t-shirt pulled over a beer belly.
February
in Nebraska
I had to wonder
how little he would wear
in summer (in my mind, I won't go there).
I stared at his tattoo. A huge
Celtic cross, weighing heavy
on a lumberjack's arm,
as he looked at the knives.
In the end, he politely
thanked me for showing him
every pocket knife from
the eight dollar boyscout
to the seventy-eight dollar Remington.
As he left with the twelve dollar
and fifty cent bone-handled one,
I knew he was just
a teddy bear disguised.
