CHOCOLATES
Cherish me, that’s all I ask you, all I need, she said.
Hold me now the way you used to, in and out of bed.
Oh, that and that alone, this Valentine’s Day, I crave.
Chocolates instead: a box of cremes and chews I gave.
On our honeymoon, remember, she asked, the promises you made?
Love, you said, would dog our heels; a debt to life be paid.
A debt to life: did I say that? Be fully paid, receipted?
That Love is something owed? And not be paid, defeated?
Easier, she said (and sighed), if Love our heels had truly dogged.
So Love’s Ideals and Chocolates, not in your mind be fogged.
