A goodbye to a marriage
"A Bonnie Raitt Ending" by Roberta Liszcz
I drove down the mountain road
and in my rear-view mirror
I watched our dog get into your truck
and my sobs tried to fill
the emptiness in my car

I was saying goodbye to L.A.
and a life I realized
was never mine
and I had to give it up
and I had to let go
of you
and families
and dreams
and childhood
and a lifetime of firsts
and the poetry
never written to me
but for you
and your longing
to love someone
the way I loved you

I drove away from a marriage
I could no longer will to be true
and as my rear-view mirror
turned to black
my heart began to bleed
and the pain ripped my chest
as my screams freed themselves
in the safety of my car
freed me from hoping
I was enough for you
because I just wasn't
because "I could never
make you love me,
if you don't."
