I have great memories of trick-or-treating!
"Trick-or-Treating Memories" by Melanie White
At nightfall, costumed youngsters on the streets do roam,
dragging along parents who would rather stay home.
Goblins and brides or ghouls and princesses?
Those giving out candy make terrible guesses.

But it doesn't matter to those trick-or-treating--
all they want is candy that's good for the eating.
Filling plastic pumpkins, they rush to each door
begging their guardians for "Just one house more."

Like flitting moths attracted to the light,
the kids stop just briefly before taking flight.
Finally, exhausted after hours have passed,
masked faces concede to go home at last.

Once there, they dump out all of their sweets
to see if siblings will trade their favorite treats.
After eating too much sugar, they plop in their beds
where memories of Halloween dance in their heads.

Halloween Poetry contest entry

Author Notes
I have great childhood memories of trick-or-treating as well as of taking my kids out on Halloween. I hope all the youngsters out there (even the adult ones) find a way to make this Halloween one worth remembering!
