Wouldn't it be nice, if time indeed occurred all at once?
"For my grief"
by Simina Flavia
|
This brief world you've now departed
Our last words were loudly shouted
You'll never know the guilt this brought.
But the past, the past is fixed
And there you ARE, and still exist
There's some small solace in this thought.
I'll explain: you know the theory
Time is linear? Well, it's dreary
So it had me all distraught.
Because then, you're gone forever
The past left. It's done. However,
Then I read, that NO, it's not.
It happens now, if theory's right
We're right there, having that fight
So you're alive. Just what I sought!
Then you see, present and past,
Are not different, nor contrast
Like life and death; it's the same lot.
And although it's just a theory
Is this not life: to wish, to query?
For my grief, that's all I've got.

Author Notes
I wrote this when someone very close to me passed away. There's no remedy for grief, but there was one theory I read that sort of helped me get through it. Physicist Carlo Rovelli had written about how time is not linear, in the way that we experience it, but rather that it occurs at the same time, all at once. Present, past and future are happening at the same "time", and it's only us that experience it as "passing", or linear. So I loved this theory because, if it is true, then someone is never really gone, they're still there right now in time, and their life is still happening, just as the present and just as the future are, at the same time.
