She lies on her side in the murky gloom. So deep the water, so cold, and without life. Nineteen submariners, alive and waiting, waiting for rescue. The submarine carries a nuclear warhead. Still the young men wait to hear the voice of their President. Eternal sleep.

50 Words Writing Contest contest entry

Author Notes
This is a contest entry: tell a story in 50 words. The Russian submarine Korsk sunk with all hands. Pleas to the Russian President were ignored. After the deaths of all men, the nuclear warhead was retrieved. It is easy to see what was more important - the warhead or the men? The submariners were expendable.
