This work has reached the exceptional level
prophecy in the belly of the whale
"In the Belly of Night" by Wabigoon
4. In the Belly of Night

in the belly of the night
I worry about the pills
the pink ones
the white ones
the circular ones
the oblong ones
I search the bland rug
for half a tranquilizer

in the black belly of the night
I worry about losses
of music
most of sex
the approach of death
the something behind me
with its headlights on
the Hispanic guy I never see
but feel as a hit and run between my shoulder blades
Hagen's spear in Gotterdammerung

the record I replay every night
trying to find the right
place in the prophecy
to set the needle down
to change it
the music
the stabbings of the earth by angels with scythes
car bomb blasts
the end of the world
but love them, you love the angels, don't you?

to this cold, harsh day
this tough love
this austerity
this fishing
without catching
but what this is
my near autistic love for you, my son
the beginning of their end
in the past
before they know it

the whirlwinds
will hit them
from the past
as they plant
and other excerpts from Pi
that seem meaningless
until you feel
the sword coming in
ejaculating these things in the Garden
the whirlwinds will hit them
suck them up into sex scandals
that bankrupt the staggeringly obscene coffers of God

Author Notes
What I have been writing about up in Canada while fishing with my son in some of the coldest, harshest weather imaginable.
