Chapter 15 of the book Let's Laugh 5
the misunderstanding
"The Poets Are No Help" by Barb Hensongispsaca
My love and I were bicyc'ling
through nature's flower bed.
I started riding next to her
so she'd hear what I said.

I chose my words so carefully
just like the poets do.
I let them flow right off my tongue;
her heart I knew I'd woo.

I tried to tell her how I felt-
of love I had for her.
Somehow, she mixed up what I said,
it all became a blur.

Compared our love to open sea
I said was deep and wide ...
just like the famous poets do,
their knowledge on my side.

I got so darned excited and
when talking 'bout my love,
I did not know I'd hurt my girl
'till she gave me a shove.

But why she shoved me, did not know.
I sounded, oh, so sweet.
I sugar coated everything.
My words were such a treat.

I knew she had misunderstood,
she thought I called her wide.
I'd never do that to her face.
'Twould be the day I died.

I tried again to tell my love
of passion that I felt.
I wanted her to understand
how she made my heart melt.

I told her that our friendship now
had gone on long enough.
Before I got much further in
she gave my ear a cuff.

I said "Oh no, my sweetest love,
you didn't understand."
Again she pulled away from me.
I tried to hold her hand.

She thought I'd found another so
she asked me who she was.
When queried why she thought 'twas true,
she told me, "Just because!"

I said, "My love, there's no one else
with which this body's lain".
She had a look upon her face,
then slapped me yet again.

I screamed at her, "Don't do that, girl!"
I yelled, "You're acting dumb!"
She turned around and bicyc'eld
on back the way we'd come.

I tried to tell her how I felt,
of love I had for her.
Next time the poets can stay home
'cause they caused quite a stir.
