I Saw A Big Surprise
"As I Looked Out My Window" by country ranch writer

As I set at my dining room table talking to the family suddenly to my surprise I saw a bobcat sitting across the way. Yes, that's right, he was staring right at me! He or she was the most beautiful animal I have ever seen. We live in the forest so wild animals roam freely here. I am surrounded on all four sides by the woods. There are no fences to keep them out. The Florida bobcat isn't a major pest, but sometimes it digs holes in yards and around properties. Only fences six feet or larger will discourage them.

The bobcat has retractable claws, like a house cat. Because a bobcat is around the size of a medium-dog, it is a solitary animal and it's track markings help distinguish it. The Florida bobcat can be found all over the state, from swamps to the suburbs.

The bobcat is a competent, typically nocturnal hunter. However, it is not unusual to spot a bobcat during the day like I did, as they only sleep two to three hours at a time and sometimes they hunt during the day. In the wild, they have been known to live up to 14 years.

The bobcat is abundant so it is not listed on the endangered list as an endangered or threatened, but it is classified as a fur-bearing game animal. It can only be hunted during certain months of the year.
If you can't get rid of bobcats from your property, seek the assistance of an authorized nuisance wildlife trapper. Remember if you have small domestic pets, keep them in after dark. They have excellent eyesight and hearing and can swim and climb trees, which helps protect them from other animal enemies in the wild as they coexist with the other animals.
