A Poem as if written by a child
"My Phoenix" by Greybærd
My teacher one time had asked me,
what kind of bird would be good for me.

Would I like a pretty blue jay,
or a woodpecker in a tree?

Maybe I'll ride on back of an ostrich,
people would stare as I went on by.

Or I could get myself an eagle,
who could fly high up in the sky!

Nothing I could think of,
really inspired me.

So I went into the library,
to see what I could see.

I went to the nature section,
I looked at every book that day.

There was no bird I really liked,
there was nothing... no way!

As I put the books away,
something had caught my eye.

In a section called mythology,
and it looked like it could fly!

I ran over, I grabbed the book,
I turned and turned the pages.

I saw pictures and read about,
a bird that's been around for ages!

It's big and red, it's on fire!
A Phoenix was its name.

No bird I ever saw in life,
could ever be the same.

Now I know this bird looks real scary,
but I don't feel that way.

In the winter we would snuggle,
he'd keep me warm all day.

He's big so we'll go out flying,
in the sky up oh so high.

Then we'll go out fishing,
And have a tasty fish fry.

Then off he'd fly up in the the sky,
Like a rocket above the trees.

I think I want a Phoenix,
YES, that's the bird for me!

Author Notes
This poem came about when I wrote a story to read to my child. Unfortunately, he had gotten a toy phoenix that day and said he would have rather had a story about that.
This is that story being told by a child.
