Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level
A poem about human suffering
"Who Will Save Us?" by Sandra Elizabeth Williams

The look on their faces, distraught, "despair lives here"
The rumblings of hunger rise, a crescendo, then subside
To ache; dull, unfulfilled, familiar, knotted tightly
Where's manna from heaven to satisfy this crave?

While mangled bodies lay in the streets, days old stench
Permeate the air, wafting through windows, doors and nostrils
The urgent desire to retch, but on second thoughts
Cannot since the last meal would not easily be replaced

Hands outstretched, reaching for just a sip of water
No thought whether it is clean or where it came from
Just enough to moisten the parched lips and throat
Where saliva, insufficiently made, could not venture

They cry but no one sees the tears in their eyes, or hears their pain
They smile, their parted lips trying to hide their suffering
"Who will help us now? Who? Who will save us now?"
Their eyes seem to ask, "From this damnation here on earth?"
