The news can effect our response to events.
"miner explosion"
by called2rite
I absent-mindedly scrubbed the potatoes I was baking for dinner that night. My thoughts were on what to fix for the rest of the meal while the local newscaster's voice droned on. "News flash alert" got my immediate attention. A prisoner escapee was in our neighborhood!
The click of a door lock and increased volume of the TV made my daughter look up. "What's going on?"
"Just the usual escaped prisoner," I nonchalantly squeaked. POP! "Did Kassy go out? I thought she was in the family room."
"She still is." my daughter grinned at my obvious jitters. Another muffled POP. I jerked.
Another tour of looking around, outside and inside of the house, silently affirmed quietness. I breathed a sigh of relief.
Dinner ready, I opened the oven door. The results stared at me; a potato explosion.
We shared the remains and put off the clean-up as long as possible.

Author Notes
The potato explosion did happen, but the rest is fiction. I often take life's experience's and try to make the ordinary unusual.
